Description
Almost to the day we released our The Mamas and The Papas: Complete Singles—50th Anniversary Collection back in January 2016, fans of the group (and they are legion!) started asking us about reissuing Papa Denny Doherty’s criminally overlooked 1971 solo album on the ABC/Dunhill label, Watcha Gonna Do. This record came out on CD only in Japan back in 2002, and commands hundreds of dollars online, so a straight reissue would have worked just fine. But that’s not how we do things at Real Gone Music…and so we aren’t stopping with the album. We’re adding six bonus tracks, five of ‘em previously unreleased, to fashion a brand-new compilation, Of All the Things—The Complete ABC/Dunhill Masters! Arranged by Jimmie Haskell, produced by Bill Szymczyk, and featuring songs written by Denny with his first wife Linda Woodward with such session players as Barry McGuire, Buddy Emmons, Russ Kunkel, “Fast” Eddy Fischer, and Eric “The Doctor” Hord, Watcha Gonna Do is truly a lost gem of early ‘70s roots rock, sort of The Mamas and Papas meeting The Band and The Eagles (Szymczyk went on to produce all of The Eagles albums). The bonus tracks include the rare single of the non-LP track “To Claudia on Thursday”—with additional vocals supplied by Spanky McFarlane of Spanky & Our Gang—plus five other tracks unearthed from both album session tapes and follow-up recordings left in the vaults. Joe Marchese provides liner notes featuring quotes and reminiscences from Eddy Fischer, Denny’s daughters, Bill Szymczyk, Michelle Phillips, and others. Artwork includes previously unpublished period photographs. Remastered by Mike Milchner/Sonic Vision, this release is a must for any fan of The Mamas and The Papas and of that gorgeous Doherty tenor!

Tracklist
1. Watcha Gonna Do
2. Neighbors
3. Gathering the Words
4. Don't You Be Fooled

Ordered! Only wish I hadn’t already paid too much for his debut before I knew this was coming.

Once again Real Gone comes up with a winner. I have one solo lp I bought from a Canadian retailer decades ago. Therefore I am excited for this release. He was such a great vocalist.

I have a copy of "Waiting for a Song," but it only has 11 tracks. The other 5 tracks on this are new to me.

AWESOME. I have a copy of the hard-to-find CD rebut but would love to expand on that. Also, his cover of "To Claudia on Thursday" is gorgeous, and blows away the original. A great addition here.

Thanks, Jay! My bad. I didn't realize Denny had released two solo albums. I always thought that "Waiting for a Song" was his only one and was on Dunhill. (So based on that, I didn't bother to compare the song titles when I posted above. I only compared the number tracks.)

That makes this even better news!! I don't believe I have any of these songs then other than the couple that appeared on The Mamas and Papas box set.

11. Shadows on My Wall
13. Sail the Waterway
14. Shadow Sounds
15. Giles of the River
16. Of All the Things

"Sail the Waterway" is the title of a rare Becker/Fagan Steely Dan song. Wonder if it's the same song.

I did some research, and not only is it the Steely Dan song, but a few of the others are early Becker/Fagen songs as well. The dots connect, as this is on ABC/Dunhill, and Becker and Fagen were hired by the label as songwriters before they decided to form the band.

Also, a few of those songs on Waiting for a Song feature Cass and Michelle on backing vocals and I believe I read once that they were the final recordings Cass made before she died.

Further research tells me that "Of All the Things" was first released on the 2016 Ultimate Anthology Mamas and Papas set from PBS.

Correction: only "Sail the Waterway" appears to be a Steely Dan song. It was the b-side of their first single, "Dallas." Neither song appeared on their first album. There was a 12" EP, from somewhere outside the US, I think, that contained those two songs plus "Do It Again" and "Haitian Divorce."

Yes, it was an English 12 inch EP - I do own a copy. I remember when the Steely Dan box set came out in the 90's, there was a stink about it, as they forgot to add Sail The Waterway and Dallas, even though there was a picture of the EP (or an ad for the EP) in the box set booklet.

Based on this, it might be worth getting for me.

I got this disc on Friday. It's stellar - great to finally have my own CD copy of Watcha Gonna Do, uniformly strong bonus tracks (in fact, the only one I don't really care for is the title track, the last cut on the disc), and excellent, informative liners. The liners trace the album's genesis in the semi-breakup of the Mamas and the Papas (Doherty's wasn't sure the band was over or not when he made the LP) and the sessions themselves. The album was made very much how it sounds: by a bunch of friends recording some songs together for a few weeks, and discovering they had enough material for an LP by the end.

The notes also go into good detail on the bonus material, which I appreciate (pet peeve of mine: when bonus material is included without any explanation behind its source).
