Description
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band's 2017 stereo mix as a 1-LP 180-gram black vinyl, and as a limited, collectible picture disc vinyl LP. The other formats and configurations of the new Sgt. Pepper anniversary edition came out back in May, and are still available:

I've heard elsewhere (you can guess) that the vinyl is the preferred version sound-wise for the new remix, but doesn't a picture disc kind of negate that?

There I go, trying to be logical again.

Yes, the picture disc is for collectability, for display, not for audiophile listening.

You'll get your wish for pristine vinyl, though, Glenn -- a 180g black vinyl edition is now scheduled to be released on the same day as the picture disc:

Back in the late 70s heyday of picture discs, the record companies often included a disclaimer about sound quality not being equal to conventional pressings.

Yep. I've only owned one, an Altered Images single, and it sounded awful.

I have a couple of the new picture discs, and they sound much better than the ones from the late 70s-80s. The old ones had a lot of surface noise, but there is none of that on the new ones I have. I am not sure if they would sound as good as the regular LPs because I didn't double dip on these, but they are quite playable, which couldn't be said for the old ones. With those, I was always sure I was doing damage to my stylus.

I bought the Mr. Crowley Live EP picture disc LP by Ozzy in '82. I believe it was supposed to be reissued on CD in the late '90s, but it never came out.

Is it possible that technology has somehow enabled today's picture discs to sound better than the older ones?

I still have that picture disc as well as ones from Iron Maiden, Venom, The Clash and Scorpions (Lonesome Crow of all things).

If the question was not rhetorical the answer is YES. :D

Based only on my personal experience, I would say yes.

I have the vinyl picture disc of Sgt. Pepper's that came out in 1978, and I've never even considered playing it on the stereo turntable.

Well, the answer remains the same whether or not the question was rhetorical.

But it was a completely legitimate question on my part. I don't "do" vinyl, but I remember reading about how the poor sound on vintage picture discs.

I still have a Sgt Peppers picture disc from a long time ago...my guess it came out in the 70's. Never played it yet.

I think that those came out in 1978 or '79.
