Description
The Beatles’ annual holiday tradition of recording jolly Christmas messages for fan club members was an important part of the band’s relationship with their most ardent supporters, affectionately referred to by them as “Beatle People.” Spanning 1963 to 1969, The Beatles’ holiday recordings were originally pressed on flexi discs and mailed to fan club members each December. Never released beyond the fan club until now, The Beatles’ seven holiday messages have been newly pressed on a rainbow of seven-inch colored vinyl singles for The Christmas Records box set, to be released worldwide on December 15. The limited edition collection presents each vinyl single with its original flexi disc sleeve artwork, accompanied by a 16-page booklet with recording notes and reproductions of the fan club’s National Newsletters, which were mailed to members with the holiday flexi discs.

$72.98 for so little audio. I guess this is a pretty package, but it's not worth it to me.

Better than a lump of coal, but what I really wanted for Christmas this year was Let it Be on Blu-ray.

Oh, we can't have that because it shows a great band *gasp* breaking up and none of our feeble minds can handle that. Meanwhile, there have been 100 books written about it, countless documentaries that shows recycled footage and, most importantly, nearly 50 years have passed. I'm with you. Don't worry about our fragile psyches. I think we can handle and sit back and make another king's ransom. Release it already.

Yeah, but I also already have the Westwood One promo, so I wouldn't be tempted here anyway. :p

And while this is a nice package, I feel left out of the loop as I have no interest in vinyl and still buy CDs.

I would buy this if it was all collected on one CD.

Heck, I'd buy it if they made it into a little "singles box"-style 7-CD set.

I would go for either of those CD options.

Thumbs down on this. (A real thumbs-down, not a Yankees thumbs-down.)

There was a bootleg collection of these, but it would be nice to have a legit CD version.

I have a bootleg vinyl LP and it sounds pretty bad. A legit CD would be great. The CD single of "Free As A Bird" has a great sounding version of "Christmas Time (Is Here Again)", though it is the full song, not as originally released on the Christmas Record. I really like the skits the Beatles performed on these releases. I wouldn't be surprised if these come out on CD at some point.

Don't know off the top of my head which version I have - I think it's Vigotone - but I'm happy with my bootleg copy.

But I'd still buy it if it officially came out on CD. I think there's an unwritten covenant among bootleg buyers that you're buying boots BECAUSE the material is not legitimately available, but if it should come out legally you'd buy the legal version even if you don't "need" it.

I'm with Dr. Evil. I packed up my Empire 598 Troubadour turntable in 1989. I've got a '63 Christmas album (4:08 long) which I swear was one of those copyright releases on iTunes. If the set becomes available on CD I'm there.

I'm trying to read the back side of the box as shown in the video in pause mode. It's a little fuzzy, but I think it reads:

Quote:
This set contains the seven Christmas messages released exclusively on flexi discs by
The Beatles Fan Club between 1963 and 1969. Remastered and pressed on seven-inch
coloured vinyl for the first time, each single is a replica of the original design.
A booklet inside the box includes the fan club Christmas newsletters and notes on the discs' contents.

Spin CDs says:

Quote:
remastered from the best possible source in the archive (often the original master tape)

So it looks like these babies are "remastered" though I don't see that term mentioned anywhere else in all the other promo ads and pics all over the internet...

I have it on CD from Yellow Dog. It sounds very good.

I would also buy an official CD.

The best source I've ever heard is the Purple Chick "From Then To You Deluxe Edition", which contains all seven of the Christmas messages in as close to perfect sound as I've ever heard, outtakes from the 1964 disc recording session, different 1965 Christmas messages, Christmas spots for Radio Caroline & Radio London from 1966, the full recording of John's bits from the 1968 disc, the 1995 edit of "Christmas Time (Is Here Again)" (issued as the B-side of the "Free As A Bird" single), and a few Christmas themed interview bits from the group.

A few years ago, Crapple released one of the Christmas single on iTunes. It was edited for some reason that I don't recall. Perhaps it was a question of paying royalties for something that was copyrighted. I'm not buying this new release anyway. but if any of these singles are edited at all. then the project is worthless, especially given that all are readily available from many sources, as originally released.

I have a radio promo CD of the complete messages that was sent out in the late 80's. It sounds amazing, not sure I want to spend that money on this one.

They should just release that commercially. I'd buy it.
