I like this compilation! I will be getting this.
My God, to be the age of 14, Ian was to write and recorded her first hit single, "Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking)", about an interracial romance forbidden by a girl's mother and frowned upon by her peers and teachers. Amazing!

I like Ian a lot. That said, several of these tracks are not originally Sony (CBS); imo she has 2 absolutely Essential CBS/Sony albums: Stars & Between The Lines. I'd put the Japan only vinyl Live in Japan 3rd, & than her later material & the self produced & marketed rarities sets (check out her website; last time I did their was ton of cool stuff; both for sale & articles she'd written).

I didn't look close enough to see that; you are correct. Also only 3 songs from Stars.
As a long tome fan, he word "Essential" used for this release is a joke. Buy Stars & Between The Lines if you're just starting out. This is a terrible comp.

Not only my favorite album of hers, but one of my favorite albums of all time. Sadly underrepresented in this set.
"From Me to You" is also from "Between the Lines." Still, just two songs to represent such a fine album on this compilation is too few.
The only other Ian album I have is "Night Rains," which has a number of strong tracks, three of which are on this collection. I listen to it as much as I do "Between the Lines."

If you like BTL, I would suggest checking out Stars. It's the immediate predecessor to Between The Lines; & while less pop in presentation is quite similar in songwriting.

I like Stars a lot. But BTL has those incredible orchestrations, and the album was something we listened to as a family when I was a kid so it has some incredible memories attached to it.

I agree, it's her best; I'd rate Stars #2.

Bump: Added the cover image and description to the first post. Sony says that many of the tracks on The Essential 2.0 have been newly remastered for 2017.

Agreed. Stars and Between The Lines represent the peak of her career for me, and that's saying a lot, because she's been pretty consistent. Maybe this collection takes into account the fact that almost any kind of fan already has, or will eventually have, a copy of Between The Lines.
