The band drew its name from [Sandy Denny's] 1968 composition "Fotheringay" about Fotheringhay Castle, in which Mary, Queen of Scots had been imprisoned.

Don't know, possible I guess. The first written mention of the village Fotheringhay as 'Fodringeia' was in 1060. Then came the castle in about 1100. Apparently the surnames Fotheringay / Fotheringhay have been around a long time, according to this article possibly before 1066 A.D. So there might be a lot of people running around England today with that last name...
