As an 80's teenager and (at the time) avid movie fan who'd see everything within 48 hours of it being released, I'd have to say Romancing The Stone. I haven't seen it since I saw it at the movies but I remember really loving that movie at the time, so I'm voting for it. More than likely Wall Street or Falling Down are better performances in terms of pure acting, or more critically acclaimed ones at least, but I didn't really enjoy them. He was good at being an old-school 'romantic comedy leading man' and I thought he and Kathleen Turner were great in Romancing The Stone.

Falling Down. I, too, might have said Romancing the Stone like Simon, but I unfortunately did revisit it (and the sequel) in more recent times, and it doesn't quite hold up as well as I remembered.

Falling Down. That moment of realization at the end gets me every time. Brilliant performance.

I'm waiting to see who'll vote for Basic Instinct...and why. Fatal Attraction wasn't terrible, but it was mostly Glenn Close who made that interesting. Douglas just had to look increasingly worried as the movie progressed. I'm pretty sure I'd still love Romancing The Stone, in the same way I still love Miami Vice. Long ago, I turned to the nostalgic side of the force and I've never looked back. Well, I've looked back, but...you know what I mean.

I went with Wall Street, mainly because he did such a great job carrying that movie. While I love the chemistry he had with Kathleen Turner in Romancing the Stone, it was kind of a cute throwback to the Bogie and Bacall vibe, whereas Wall Street was something new-ish. The American President was dominated by Sorkin's writing, much more than Douglas's acting, and Basic Instinct was dominated by something else. So Wall Street is my choice when I think of Michael Douglas.

I voted Romancing The Stone because I think that whole romantic comedy leading man thing is harder to pull off than it looks. Also, this movie has one of my favorite lines when he is looking through an old issue of Rolling Stone: "Aw man, the Doobie Brothers broke up!"

Y'know, I really don't have fond memories of any of these movies.

This is a tough choice.
My favorite performance by him is Falling Down, but I find the movie problematic overall. However, I went with OTHER, and picked David Fincher's The Game. Douglas' slow devolution from confidant master of the universe to frantic homeless kook is a thing of beauty.

Any time my wife and I get turned around or lost, one of us will inevitably quote Douglas and say "Angel, you are hell and gone from Cartegena!" And any time a dog show it's teeth, you'll always hear "Look at them snappers, Ralph."

You could say the same thing about Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct. As a kid who grew up in the 90's she was the only reason I liked that movie. The only movies of his I've seen is the aforementioned Instinct, Ant-Man, and Fatal Attraction. Can't really decide which one I dig more between the three?

His career defining movie will always be Wall Street as the character Gordon Gekko. I worked on Wall Street in those days and adored the movie (back when Charlie Sheen had his shit together and could act). Still one of my all time favorite movies.
My greatest guilty pleasure is Basic Instinct, another movie that looks great and was at the right time right place. Sharon Stone was gorgeous back then and Michael was fantastic up against her strong character called Catherine Tramell. The heat off the screen was palpable back then.
I also own the special ice pick version of the DVD. Yes it came packaged with an ice pick.

It genuinely was a throwback to an earlier time, but it was a well-done throwback.

Of that whole generation of actors, Douglas was one of the most consistently reliable - he was rarely in bad movies. Some were better than others, obviously, but he was never in any genuine turkeys that I can recall.

I liked the Romancing the Stone set of movies - but I went with The American President. It had a precursor feel of The West Wing, a very enjoyable T.V. series. Those are the two that I'd likely stop and rewatch if I saw they were on - the others, not so much. The others were good or even great, but not as worthwhile a second time around. I like a show to have rewatchability.

Falling Down is one of the best movies of the past umpteen years, and he is riveting in it. So, that one.

The best movie on this list is Ant-Man . I don't consider it a Michael Douglas movie though (but he does an excellent job!)
So I'm choosing The American President. One of my favorite presidential movies, couple this with Dave, and I'm wishing that anyone in the Oval Office had half the charm, character or charisma of these cinematic commander-in-chiefs.
