Works Volume 1

Image

Description
Formed in 1970, Emerson, Lake & Palmer were torchbearers of the progressive rock sound and one of rock’s first super-groups. The world-conquering, stadium-filling prog giants helped to broaden the audience for the genre from hundreds of thousands into tens of millions and were one the most commercially successful rock bands of the 1970s. Their first 7 album releases all made the U.K. albums chart top 10 and U.S. top 20. Works Volume 1 (originally released as 'Works') is ELP's fifth studio album, released as a double LP in 1977, and now expertly remastered for the first time in 24 bit / High Density format from the original tapes and reissued here as a 2CD set. Comprises three solo band member LP sides, with the fourth as the complete group. Features ELP's anthemic and stylish ‘Fanfare For The Common Man’, a massive hit which reached No.2 in the U.K.; the brilliant, Keith Emerson compiled, Piano Concerto No.1, performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra; excellent romantic songs from Greg Lake at the peak of his creativity, and hard rocking classical adaptations from Carl Palmer - featuring Joe Walsh on lead guitar for one song. Works 1 took ELP's bombastic, keyboard-driven prog rock epics to the limit. The booklet in this gatefold, softpack, double CD set contains extensive, exclusive sleeve notes with new band interviews, and rare ELP archive photos.

Works Volume 2

Their first 7 album releases all made the U.K. albums chart top 10 and U.S. top 20. Works Volume 2 is ELP's sixth studio album, released in 1977, and now expertly remastered for the first time in 24 bit / High Density format from the original tapes. The album's brief, eclectic compositions cover an array of musical styles, combining stimulating originals and handsomely orchestrated renditions of 'Maple Leaf Rag', 'Honky Tonk Train Blues', and 'Show Me The Way To Go Home'. Works 2 showcases incredibly strong performances from all 3 band members - Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer. Includes the massive hit 'I Believe On Father Christmas', Greg Lake's beautiful composition, highlighting his strong voice and vibrant acoustic guitar. CD1 features the remastered original album. Some of CD1 and all of CD2 feature tracks from the ‘In Concert’ (1979) album (later reissued as ‘Works Live’, 1993), recorded at a 26th August 1977 show at the Olympic Stadium, Montreal, Canada and other shows on that year's world tour. The booklet in this gatefold, softpack, double CD set contains extensive, exclusive sleeve notes with new band interviews, and rare ELP archive photos.

Love Beach

Their first 7 album releases all made the U.K. albums chart top 10 and U.S. top 20. 'Love Beach' (1978) is the final ELP studio album from the 1970s classic era, expertly remastered for the first time in 24 bit / High Density format from the original tapes. The LP finds the band back to their intimate best - producing a lighter, more concise and accessible album, with the band jamming in the relaxed atmosphere of a studio in Nassau, Bahamas. As usual, ELP produced an excellent, technically accomplished mix of classical music and electronics, once again unearthing their extraordinary musical chemistry. Includes fans' / live favourites 'The Gambler' and the rockin' 'Canario' (based on Rodrigo's 'Fantasia Para Un Gentilhombre'). Side 2 is taken up by the superb 'Memoirs Of An Officer And A Gentleman' - one of their finest suites, highlighting voice, piano, and marching drums...

Tracklist
1. All I Want Is You (2017 Remaster)
2. Love Beach (2017 Remaster)
3. Taste Of My Love (2017 Remaster)
4. The Gambler (2017 Remaster)
5. For You (2017 Remaster)
6. Canario (2017 Remaster)
7. Memoirs Of An Officer And A Gentleman: i. Prologue / The Education Of A Gentleman, ii. Love At First
8. All I Want Is You (1978 Alternate Mix)
9. Taste Of My Love (1978 Alternate Mix)
10. The Gambler (1978 Alternate Mix)
11. For You (1978 Alternate Mix)
12. Honourable Company (A March) [1978 Alternate Mix]
13. Canario (1978 Rehearsal Out-Take)
14. Letters From The Front (1978 Rehearsal Out-Take)

I hope Andy Pearce does this. His re-mastering of "Pictures of an Exhibition" was tops!

I'm so glad they are going forward with the catalog!

Of course, as far as bonus cuts go, the two Works albums will be tough, since Works Volume 2 was a mix of new songs and outtakes.

I really hope Love Beach (yes, I'm serious), In Concert (or Works Live as it's now known), Black Moon, Live at the Royal Albert Hall and In the Hot Seat (it's awful, but there are gems) get the treatment.

I like completion!

I love "Canario", it's a masterpiece and the only Classical composition on here.

I actually am fond of "All I Want is You" and "Love Beach" and "Memoirs of an Office and a Gentleman" is very good but doesn't reach what it strives for in the 20 minutes that it runs.

The rest is atrocious especially the deplorable "Taste of My Love."

And those satin Love Beach jogging shorts, and the chest hair...oh my.

But will they really do the whole catalog?

The first UK batch did but the bonus tracks stunk.

If they do all these I wonder if any bonus material will be included at all.

Oh, come on Linda. See it as (almost) a Greg Lake solo album with Emerson & Palmer helping out.

Look at that way and it can reassessed differently, oh, also don't look at that cover. A joke intended by the band that nobody got. The Bee Gee's would have been proud though.

Actually, Keith had to take the whole album over in the end including production, and I'm sure that's where "Canario" and "Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentlemen" came from.

But yes, some of the Pop crap is Greg and Pete Sinfield's doing.

I had heard this as well. Do you know why that occurred? Also I just read that Greg Lake's bio is due out in September. He had been working diligently from what I understand.

Greg just lost interest in ELP from what I read, and Keith was determined to finish the album.

Carl wanted to do a farewell tour in 1979, but by that point the division had grown too large for them to continue.

Too much exposed chest hair would be another reason.

Domestic details for Lake's memoir haven't been listed yet, but I made a thread for the UK publication of the book:

Linda, slightly off-topic I think I saw something about a new Hipgnosis book (I know they didn't do ELP) with every album cover due in April?

Is that true and is it a US release?

So, do we know if this ELP has bonus tracks and who remastered it?

BMG has now added Works Volume 2 to the schedule, and both volumes will be released in the UK on May 26th as 2CD remasters. We don't yet know who did the remastering, but the tracklists are in the first post.

It's really happening! A remaster of Love Beach is coming and I've added it to the first post. (No tracklist for that one, yet.)

I can't justify getting this stuff (again) to myself...I'm pleased by the fact they're releasing it all, however. :)
