Bannings: If you're not nice
We've almost reached the end of 2016, so let's do this. List your favourite music of the past year, as many or as few as you like, categorised however you want.

Some of my most-played "2016 music" actually came out in previous years, so I'll just list my top choices that actually apply to this year.

Album: The Galileo 7 "Live-O-Graphic"
Single: The Galileo 7 "Cruel Bird"
Vault: Big Star "Complete Third"
Video: The Beach Boys "Classic Albums: Pet Sounds"
Artist: The Moot

Album — Jeff Beck - Loud Hailer
Blues — Tinsley Ellis - Red Clay Soul (longtime fan; I find this very relaxing)
Potential — Ana Popovic - Trilogy (need to spend more time with this 3cd album)
Documentary — PBS Soundbreaking (and I haven't even made it all the way through yet)
Best Timing — David Bowie - Blackstar
Jazz Discovery — Hiromi (jazz piano is not even close to my first go-to jazz choice, but this lady is deserving of more exploration)
Live Concert — Dala (this marvelous Canadian duo beat out the Avett Bros.)
Late to the Party — Opeth - Pale Communion (2014) (Recently found this group and album, and I can't stop listening to this particular album, whether it is representative of the group or not)
Infatuation — Qello Concerts channel

I concur! It's been a great year for remixes, remasters and special boxes. Add XTC's Skylarking, the new King Crimson box and the new Stones album.

I spent way too much time this year listening to reissues and deluxe editions.
But I am extremely fond of Bun E. Carlos' Greetings from Bunezuela! and would rank it highly on any list I'd make of new releases for 2016.

I used the usual ICE + Wikipedia. I can't find a hi-res site that lists by year of release; I went to the "big 3" & keyed in "2016" & got a few hits; but it's very incomplete. For hi-res, I also glanced through my collection & checked file dates; + looked at posts I had made here & on another forum. I found quite a bit, but please don't assume I'm endorsing sound quality other then on the excellent sound quality section. I did intentionally leave out any hi res album that had really awful sound even if I loved the music. Conversely, there were a few with less then stellar sound (ELP, BOC, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Nicks,) that I included because I love the music. I'm assuming I missed a ton of hi-rez that I own & really like.

This is a lot of work! I've been saying for years I need to add dates to my collection spreadsheet.......

I can't believe there was this little CD New or Vault that I liked, as I know I spent way more then this.......

My Album of the year: Stevie Nicks - 1982 concert on the Bella Donna DE

CD

New Releases

David Bromberg - The Blues, The Whole Blues & Nothing But The Blues
Elle King - Love Stuff (there is also an hr edition of this great album, but it's terribly brickwalled as is the cd, so save your $'s & buy the cd!)
Tom Petty - Mudcrutch 2
Lucinda Williams The Ghosts of Highway 20

Vault

Ani DiFranco - Glenside November 11, 2012
Grateful Dead - Various Dave's Picks
Ian Matthews - Live At Rockpalast
Santana 4 - LIVE
Wishbone Ash - Tracks 3
Frank Zappa - Chicago 1978

I really know I am old as I only can come up with 3 new releases and a whole bunch of vault releases. And all 3 new releases are from dinosaurs.
New releases -
1. The Blues, the Whole Blues and Nothing But the Blues - David Bromberg - nothing better then a great musician with a sense of humor. My only regret is all those years he was semi-retired.
2.Blue & Lonesome - IMO the best Stones release since Some Girls - highly unexpected.
3.Live - ZZ Top - Since this was listed here under new releases on this site - that's where I stuck it.

Vault
1.) Light Meat - Uncle Meat is easily one of Zappa's top 6 releases. Here we have the original mix on cd for the first time - an alternate sequencing of the titles with some extras and different edits and nearly a half of cd with alternate mixes and out takes.
2.) Little Dot - the second live set from 72's Petite Wazoo. This band was so under-rated. Again this release was set up by FZ in the mid 70's/early 80's then shelved. Sound is a little raw but the music makes up for that.
3.) Road Tapes Venue 3 7/5/70 - The Flo & Eddie band before they became the groupie obsessed band - with George Duke and a lot of great solos. Again raw but the music makes up for it.
4.) The Crux of the Biscuit - This is FZ's alternate Apostrophe with a lot more music. Jack Bruce jams highlight this along with a stellar version of Uncle Remus with George Duke.
5.) Otis Redding Live at the Whiskey A Go Go 1966 - A great package - even though there is much redundancy - one could never tire of listening to this.
6.) Everybody's in Show Biz - Kinks - at last the expanded, cleaned up sound of this Kinks Klassic.
7.) Chicago 78 - Zappa - Starts out with rarely played Twentyone - drifts into a sort of boring greatest hits - disc 2 is a killer - many solo's - I think FZ is playing the Hendrix strat.
8.) Future Blues - Canned Heat - expanded - sounding better than ever. Allan Wilson's last outing with the band. One of my favorite lp's of all time. How I miss Wilson and Hite.
9.) Love Peace and Happiness - Chambers Brothers - a straight re-issue. This was out once before for about 1 1/2 hours. The sound is cleaned up. After this these guys sort of fell off the earth.
10.) Machine Gun - Hendrix. To be honest I purchased this on the issue date and it took me a month to listen to it - wasn't expecting much. I was shocked at how much better this is than any of the other BOG releases.
11.) Little Richard Reprise Collection - The Rill Thing/King of R&R/Second Coming - IMO his last great period. This could have been GREAT if they added all the unreleased tunes he recorded during this period,

Box sets -
1.)The Last of the Teen Age Idols - Alex Harvey. At last he's gotten a box set that covers his entire career. Even includes the pulled back tune No Complaints Department about the death of his brother live on stage and the air crash...I guess the song was too personal. Anyways my only complaint is there is some missing materials - the alternate release of the Impossible Dream - the BBC sessions, the Live cds and some of the later solo cuts from his lps. Even includes all the single b-sides that cost me mega bucks. If they put all the tracks on here what would folks like us do?
2.) The Turtles box set and the singles cd set - these guys were funny before FZ. Includes everything I can thing of.
3.) Dylan Live 1966 - Love to hear how tours progress and things change. Sound is very raw at times but as a tape trader that is A-OK.
4.) Album Collection - Elvis Presley - This is where I got interested in music. Even though I have more Elvis releases than anyone but Zappa and maybe Johnny cash - I had to go for this. A few releases never before on cd.

Well onto 2017
The Fresh Cream box
more Kinks release
whatever Dylan puts out
The rest of Zappa's vault - or whatever portion they see fit to release.

I am just amazed how quickly the time has gone by this year - and certainly has not been one of those "time flies while your having fun" that is for sure.
I don't know why I was taken aback by seeing this post - but I have to get to reviewing my purchases here in a bit.

It'll be a miracle if I get my list done in December as I still got a big pile of new releases I haven't heard even once. Where do these artists get off releasing so much good music with so little time to hear them all?

I think I forgot to add the U.K. box set. Now that's one that came out of nowhere.
