Description
A true epic and a landmark release in Rush’s long history, the prog power trio’s 1976 album, 2112, is due to receive a suitably epic and landmark super deluxe edition anniversary release on 16 December. In a stunning 200g 3LP pressing, with two CDs replicating the audio, plus a DVD capturing Rush at their finest on stage at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey, 2112 – 40th is an anniversary celebration like no other. Joining in the celebration is the Rush | Time Stand Still DVD, which, due for release on 18 November, captures the band up close and personal on their acclaimed 40th-anniversary tour of 2015.

With 2112 itself remastered at Abbey Road Studios, the super deluxe box set is also bolstered by rare live recordings (including the seldom-performed ‘The Twilight Zone’, plus outtakes from the group’s three-night stand at Toronto’s Massey Hall, ‘Something For Nothing’ and a 15-plus-minute performance of the title track), a studio outtakes in the shape of a version of ‘Solar Federation’, which features Neil Peart’s isolated vocals that close the 2112 suite in ‘Grand Finale’, plus specially recorded album tracks by long-term Rush fans Steven Wilson (who takes on ‘The Twilight Zone’) and Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins (‘Overture’).

An embarrassment of riches, the super deluxe edition also features a laser-etched side of vinyl (of the hologram which featured on the 2015 vinyl reissue of the album), a turntable mat featuring Hugh Syme’s iconic Starman design, plus a number of exclusive bonus items, among them two 12” x 12” lithograph prints (one of which features Syme’s original sketch for the Starman character, the other a 1976 Massey Hall show ticket stub), a reprint of the 1976 Massey Hall flyer, plus three badges, each one featuring a band member.

Though the reissue will be made available on standard 2CD+DVD and 3LP formats as well, the super deluxe box set is the final word on what’s hailed as one of the finest prog rock albums of all time.

This is one of those "DUH" purchases for me.

Not thrilled with the covers part of this.

The Elton John "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" had that same dumb concept.

I've had the live DVD for years, so there's not much here for me other than a few live tracks.

As a Rush nut, I'll get the 2 CD/1 DVD, but on the cheap.

I saw "Time Stand Still" last night and it was amazing. There was an advertisement for this set before the show. As others have said, the "cover versions" really diminish this. I think I'll stick with the previous deluxe edition.

A little underwhelmed with the extra content. The covers don't bother me too much - I'm curious to hear the Steven Wilson track - but they're not something I expect to play much. I see their web site is charging $90 for the vinyl - not sure it really adds that much value to the set.

Last night, I was convinced this was a no-brainer for me. Not entirely sure of that now, but we'll see.

I love how this is described as an "embarrassment of riches" in the press release.

An embarrassment, yes.

I agree with the covers...I don't need to hear other bands play their music...I'd rather have more rare footage from RUSH.

And it would have been nice to get a new 5.1 mix done by Steven Wilson.

I concur. I really don't care for the Chykli mix.

Another missed opportunity... Mediocre track listing, lousy updated cover art, no 5.1 mix, and no blu-ray.

Lame, issued the "super deluxe edition" just a few years ago and are now back with a "40th anniversary edition."

I'm not getting this either since I have the version w/the Blu ray and the version in the more recent reissue boxed sets that came out a few years ago[don't need a 3rd version].

This is just a crass cash-in by Mercury.

The previous Deluxe was a joke as well.

The one to have is either the 1997 remaster or the 2011 one from the Sector 1 box which is probably the best.

The bonus material here is desperate, especially the "cover versions".

Although I've had the Passaic, NJ DVD for years, I know others may not, but wasn't this show already included in the R40 Blu-Ray box?

Good question - hadn't thought about that.

Glad you mentioned it - this is the track list from the Capitol Theater portion of the R40 bonus disc:

- Bastille Day
- Anthem
- Lakeside Park
- 2112
- Fly By Night/In The Mood

Is that the complete performance?

It's only the Blu-Ray I believe.

Judging from the quality (or lack thereof) of this release, it would seem that Rush themselves had no official involvement in putting this together.

Very lackluster way to commemorate a 40 year old album, IMO.

A big clue was the lack of a new 5.1 mix yet they have Steven Wilson produce a new covers track. Have Steve overhaul a surround mix and this would have sold like hotcakes!

The first 5.1 remix, Moving Pictures, was pretty good. But they seemed to get less and less good with each release, although Fly By Night was okay. A little "brickwalled" like Smiff is always saying to me.

Rush needs to be done by someone who knows what he's doing. Alex and Steve are friends.
