The Band Prep Expansive 'The Last Waltz' Box Set

The Band have announced an expansive 40th anniversary reissue campaign behind their 1978 live album/concert film, The Last Waltz. Rhino Records will release four versions of the set: a remastered two-CD version, four-CD/Blu-ray Deluxe Edition and six-LP Deluxe Edition vinyl will be released November 11th, while a massive four-CD/2-Blu-ray Collector's Edition is set for release December 9th.

The Last Waltz finds the Band performing their iconic last concert on Thanksgiving Day 1976 at San Francisco's Hinterland Theatre. The folk-rock quintet – Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel and Robbie Robertson – were joined by a crew of all-star guests, including Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Dr. John, Van Morrison and Muddy Waters.

Director Martin Scorsese filmed the concert for an acclaimed documentary feature of the same name that hit theaters in April 1978.
The deluxe editions feature complete audio from the concert, including rehearsals and outtakes, with the 180-gram vinyl version presented in an ornate lift-top box. The sets include rare performances not featured in the film, including "Furry Sings the Blues" (with Mitchell) and "All Our Past Times" (with Clapton). The CD version also features new liner notes from Rolling Stone's Ben Fong-Torres and David Fricke.

The Collector's Edition – limited to 2,500 copies worldwide – includes complete audio, a Blu-ray of the film, a second Blu-ray with a rare 1990s interview with Scorsese and Robertson, a photo gallery and 5.1 audio mix of the original album. The set will also include a 300-page book featuring a full replication of Scorsese's shooting script, rare and previously unseen photos and a foreword by Scorsese.

As I attempt to parse the product offering, I'm skeptical about the remastering. I wonder if the 2CD version is a port from the remixes done for the 2002 4CD box set (which was already reconfigured and reissued in 2013) rather than the original soundtrack mix.

The Scorsese/Robertson interview would be nice but isn't essential, and the 5.1 mix is also likely a port, this time from the 2002 DVD-A release.

Collectors may also want to consider the MoFi SACD version of the original 2CD soundtrack.

I am confused with all the versions of this that have been released.

Is there any new material here and, if not, how is this different from previous issues?

At this point, the only "new" content (not including various printed material) is the "rare 1990s interview with Scorsese and Robertson" only available in the limited 6-disc Collector's Edition.

'the last waltz" has almost reached 'pet sounds" territory in terms of redundancy, i hope i'm around to see what "new things" they will find for the 50th anniversary edition.
