I loved this album when it was released but I'm not sure I've played it in over 25 years. I should dig out my old copy and reacquaint myself with it.

It's amazing how old some of those recordings are. They were doing original material that would end up on Especially For You at their very first gig five years earlier. I wasn't at that first show, but I did see them more than once in the early days. The Savage Young Smithereens!

My favorite version of "Behind the Wall of Sleep" will always be the one from an early (1989) edition of "MTV Unplugged," featuring Graham Parker on guest vocals. The track is included on the "Attack of the Smithereens" comp. The entire 4-song "Unplugged" set is available on iTunes, and includes additional input from Parker on "Cupid/Chain Gang (Medley)." (The other two songs are "A Girl Like You" and "Blood and Roses.")
