'Marvel's Iron Fist' Taps 'Dexter' Alum Scott Buck as Showrunner

Marvel's Iron Fist is starting to take shape.

Former Dexter executive producer Scott Buck has been named as the showrunner of the upcoming Netflix series, Marvel announced Monday.

Iron Fist centers on Daniel Rand, who fights against the criminal elements corrupting New York City with his kung-fu skills and ability to summon the power of the fiery Iron Fist. The series picks up with Rand returning to the Big Apple after having gone missing for several years.

"Scott came in with a take on Iron Fist that quite simply knocked us off our feet," Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb said in a statement. "We always look for the most creative minds in the field to help us bring our heroes to life, and with Scott we’ve found someone that can deliver yet another great series in the ongoing story of The Defenders."

Added Buck: "I’ve always been drawn to writing complex, intriguing characters, and that’s what most excites me about the opportunity to bring Danny Rand and Iron Fist to life with Marvel on Netflix."

Marvel's Iron Fist marks the fourth collaboration between the comic book company and the streaming service. Iron Fist is the latest chapter in the ongoing Defenders series that also includes Daredevil and Jessica Jones, which premiered last month on Netflix. Next up is Marvel's Luke Cage, which will debut sometime in 2016 before Iron Fist. The characters of all four shows will eventually unite in The Defenders miniseries.

This marks Buck's first TV gig since Dexter, on which he served as showrunner for the serial killer drama's final three seasons. Although critically acclaimed for much of its run, the series finale was largely panned by critics and fans alike in 2013. Buck's other credits include Six Feet Under, Rome and Coach. He is repped by CAA.

I haven't seen anything he's done (except, possibly, some of Six Feet Under). I'm really hoping they draw heavily from the Brubaker/Fraction series, though. I kind of wish they'd reverse the set up from the other Netflix shows, and set most of the series in K'un L'un, then having him arrive in New York towards the end.

Too bad they can't do a Power Man & Iron Fist movie with a young Richard Roundtree and Chuck Norris.

That's what the people really want.

I wonder if Marvel is considering an Asian actor to play Danny Rand. It occurred to me today in a completely non-Byrne way -- it's not like race is integral to the character, aside from the sense that his shtick is being a white man appropriating 70's Asian cultural stereotypes, and it seems like that kind of appropriation is the sort of subject Marvel would like the cultural conversation about their media to avoid.

Game of Thrones actor Finn Jones to play Iron Fist

Marvel has found its newest superhero: Game of Thrones actor Finn Jones has landed the coveted series lead of Iron Fist.

Jones, who plays Ser Loras Tyrell on the HBO hit, will take on the role of the martial arts master, EW has learned.

Iron Fist is set to be the fourth Marvel and Netflix collaboration, following Daredevil, Jessica Jones and the forthcoming Luke Cage. Scott Buck (Dexter) has been tapped as showrunner.

Netflix and Marvel had no comment.

'Lord of the Rings' Actor Boards Marvel's 'Iron Fist' Series

Marvel continues to flesh out the lineup for its upcoming Iron Fist Netflix series.

David Wenham (Lord of the Rings, 300) has joined the drama as Harold Meachum, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The fourth of Marvel's five-series deal with the streaming giant, Iron Fist centers on a martial-arts warrior imbued with a mystical power known as the Iron Fist, which allows him to channel his chi to superhuman levels, giving him healing, telepathy and super-punching abilities. His alter ego is Daniel Rand, a native New Yorker raised in K’un-L’un, an alternate-dimension city where he attained those martial arts and supernatural skills.

In the series, Danny returns to the Big Apple after being missing for four years and uses his kung fu skills to fight against the criminals corrupting the city.

Meachum is described as a ruthless corporate leader who was partners with Danny's parents at the time of their deaths. The role he plays in Danny's past and future will be revealed over the course of the series. Meachum made more than 20 appearances in the Iron Fist comic books over the years, dating back to the 1940s.

Wenham joins previously cast Finn Jones (Game of Thrones), who play the titular character, and Jessica Henwick, who will play Colleen Wing. Dexter's Scott Buck is on board to serve as showrunner on the drama, which will come after Luke Cage, which debuts this fall on Netflix.

Wenham will next be seen in the Nicole Kidman film Lion and the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean sequel. He is repped by Markham, Froggatt and Irwin and Anonymous Content.

I like it when the way I've always pronounced a comics name or word in my head is how it's pronounced "in real life". A friend and I used to have silly arguments over whether it was "Koon Loon" or "Kuhn Luhn" or "Kuh-Uhn Luh-Uhn" because of the apostrophes. :)

The show looks boss. Hope it holds up better than the last half of Luke Cage.

Well, the first review that I know of says it's not good. (The first 6 episodes anyways).

I suppose they can't all be winners.

I almost find "laughably bad" encouraging. Iron Fist has always been a mayonnaise sandwich on Wonder Bread as far as I'm concerned. The Netflix shows have been diminishing. I lost interest halfway through Daredevil Season 2, and couldn't get into Power Man at all. Something entertainingly incompetent might just be my cup o' tea right now. ("Entertaining" being the key here -- I won't sit through bad and boring like Agents of Shield.)

I liked DD season 2, but lost interest after a couple of episodes of Luke Cage. I'll probably end up watching the rest sometime, but it wasn't compelling.

Every Marvel Netflix show has been WAY overrated by critics and the geek community, and has had severe pacing problems, but most made up for it with engaging casting. Vincent D'onofio and Jon Bernthal saved their seasons of Daredevil. David Tennant did the same for Jessica Jones. Once Mahershala Ali's story on Luke Cage was done, so was I.

Hopefully there's some brilliant casting in the back half of Iron Fist, or it's going to be another mediocre effort.
