enough of the steely dan comps....seriously....doors territory is very close.
I don't think that they have a lot really. This one is part of a series though.
1978 Greatest Hits Release date: November 30, 1978
Steely Dan Release date: 1978
1982 Gold Release date: 1982
1985 A Decade of Steely Dan Release date: 1985
The Very Best of Steely Dan: Reelin' In the Years Release date: October 1985
1987 The Very Best of Steely Dan: Do It Again Release date: October 1987
1993 Remastered: The Best of Steely Dan – Then and Now Release date: November 1993
Citizen Steely Dan Release date: December 14, 1993
1998 Members Edition Release date: June 6, 1998
2000 Showbiz Kids: The Steely Dan Story, 1972–1980 Release date: November 14, 2000
2006 Steely Dan: The Definitive Collection Release date: August 1, 2006
2007 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best of Steely Dan Release date: June 12, 2007
Found Studio Tracks Release date: 2000
2009 The Very Best of Steely Dan Release date: June 29, 2009
Collected Release date: July 2009
and i know there are quite a few other imports out there as well.
they had a total of 9 studio albums and one live album. (10 studio if you count "you gotta walk it")
and as jimbo stated above, they can't even put out the 2 songs form the EP on a CD for the fans. those 2 and the "you gotta walk it" album they seem to have disowned. kind of like bob seger and his 3 albums that simply refuses to releases for some ungodly reason.

I'm not trying to argue, but I disagree that it's a lot. There are a few categories of comps - ranging from budget collections (like their entry in Universal 20th Century Masters collection) to the standard one cd (or one album) greatest hits, more expansive ones multi-disc ones and box sets.
For a one disc greatest hits on cd for them, you have Decade which got replaced by the Definitive Collection... and oh yeah a budget collection.
I have Showbiz Kids which has no comparable repeat collection in print in the US.
This Collected set would be close, but I have never seen the Collected sets in the US. I ordered one from another artist that came from the UK.

i'm not trying to argue at all, just stating facts.
as we move forward in time more and more artists will have more best of/greatest hits comps than regular albums, i'm sure of it.
steely dan, the doors, the beach boys, elvis and sinatra quickly come to mind as those who have already achieved this goal. and there are probably others that i just can't think of right now.

These are really the only true US comps:
(1978) Greatest Hits
(1982) Gold (an extension of Greatest Hits; no repeats)
(1985) A Decade of Steely Dan (one of the first CD-only comps)
(1993) Citizen Steely Dan (4-CD Box Set)
(2002) Showbiz Kids - The Steely Dan Story (1972-1980) (first and only 2-CD comp)
(2006) The Definitive Collection (basically an update of Decade, adding two of the latter-day tracks, and swapping out one other)
(2007) 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection (who didn't get one of these?!?)
so we do have 11 CD's of greatest hits from 9 studio albums!
that, my friends, IS doors territory.
I don't see it that way. Greatest Hits came out before the breakup. Gold came out after the breakup and completed the picture (with no repeats). Those two releases were from the vinyl era. Decade replaced the vinyl comps, and was one of the first CD-only comps to hit the market (a big deal in 1985). It was the only comp available (sans the 4-CD box set) until 2002, when they put out the only 2-CD comp w/remastered sound. In 2006, there had been no single-disc comp on the market for a number of years, so they updated Decade's track listing, mastering, and changed the title to Definitive since it now covered more than a decade. So everything official is really well thought out and replaces what was previously on the market.
At the end of the day, Steely Dan's collections have evolved to a single-disc comp (Definitive), a double-disc comp (Showbiz Kids), and a box set (Citizen Dan). That makes total sense. Then throw in the obligatory record company budget line (Millennium) and new 3-CD series (Collected), and it's doesn't even sniff Door's territory. The Doors and/or their record company put out comps for the sake of putting out comps, with no thought to what's already on the market. Essentially giving you multiple choices of nearly the same thing over and over again.

i have all the complete remastered series from about 15 years back, and had to get the Showbiz Kids for "FM" and "Here At The Western World" - as you all understand. and KUDOS to Mobile Fidelity for two of their finer moments with "Aja" and "Gaucho!"
worth noting that the Citizen box set was missing the intro, the first 20 seconds or so of "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" which i don't know was ever corrected. i returned my box set and bought the discs individually, which i should have done in the first place for the artwork, good liner notes, etc.
the Donald Fagen solo material needs a proper remaster(?)/repackage/reissue WITH the damn bonus tracks. i have the NIghtfly Trilogy box, but it's a tad squirrelly - could use a better effort.

FYI
they did replace the "rikki" with the corrected intro almost immediately. if i recall correctly you had to send the "bad" in and they sent you a new one, but i could be wrong on this, someone here will remember exactly how it went i'm sure.

OK , you're right.
