Hell to the yeah. I'm starving for a good Western and love me some Tarantino.

As long as it's a realistic depiction of the American Old West, then Li'l Jay and I are in.

I'll need a copy of the script to compare to the historical record and reality.

I may wring my hands over certain directors not having Best Director Oscars or their films not getting Best Picture. Quentin Tarantino isn't one of them. Because although I think he should have gotten a Best Director Oscar for Pulp Fiction (Sorry, Robert Zemeckis!) and that film should have beaten out Forrest Gump, I genuinely think that Tarantino cares more about making great movies and the type of movies he likes rather than rack up golden statues.

That being said, it would be nice if Sam Jackson got a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for this film that he should have got for PF.

The Old West is now found in the new Chicago.

The only reason I'm not buying tickets for Christmas Day is that I may have to work that day. But I'll probably get tickets for Boxing Day. (Although if I were a Rocky fan, I really should watch Creed on that day.)

How many other directors would have cast a actress over fifty not named Meryl Streep in a film like this? Actually, this makes me want to see it even more!

Ennio Morricone wrote original music for this movie---the first Tarantino film with an original score---but most of it was written for another movie where Kurt Russell is trapped in the freezing cold fighting enemies that want to kill him, only this time the enemies are human. Yup, most of the Morricone music was unused music written for The Thing in 1982.

Saw this movie Saturday morning, and while it's not quite as good as the trailer makes it out to be (part of me expects every Tarantino movie to be as good as Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill, Part One), it's still a very good movie. Even though most of the movie takes place indoors, the illusion of freezing cold is so strong that I thought the theatre was colder than it was. (It's sort of the opposite reaction of getting thirsty while watching the "Anvil of the Sun" sequence in Lawrence of Arabia.) You won't see any surprises along the lines of Darth Vader being Luke's father, but there ARE surprises and to talk too much about the movie would ruin it.

One thing I should say in advance. Jennifer Jason Leigh's character gets hit a LOT in this movie. Now Daisy Donague is a bad woman and in my opinion deserves EVERY bust to the chops---and more---that she gets. But there are many people who believe that no matter how bad a woman is, it is never right to physically strike her. This isn't your movie if you are one of those people.

Also---and this didn't occur to me until after I saw the movie and read a review---Kurt Russell does not do a John Wayne imitation. He's recognizably himself, and to me he seems like an older tougher version of either Wyatt Earp (whom he played in Tombstone) or R.J. Macready from The Thing. That being said, after reading a reviewer's comment that Russell's character is basically John Wayne, I realize that the reviewer is right. Every word Russell speaks is the type of dialogue that a John Wayne character would say. (The biggest difference? I think Wayne would refuse to play a character who would strike a woman. Threaten? Yes. Actually do it? No.) I also think that in the back of his mind, Tarantino was thinking of John Wayne when he wrote this screenplay. I'd say that Samuel L. Jackson is like Woody Strode, except that in Wayne's lifetime Strode was never allowed to have as big a part as Jackson's is in this movie. A better analogy would be Ward Bond, Victor McClaughlin, or Dean Martin. Walter Goggins---who is the real breakout star of this movie---is Montgomery Cliff or Jeffrey Hunter.

I'd like to hear what other people think when they see this, although it probably won't be the "roadshow" version. (I suspect the difference will be no intermission in the "non-roadshow" version, and no narration after the enter'acte explaining what happened offscreen during the intermission. One last warning, however. You may be comfortable taking your teenage kids to a movie where buckets of blood are shed, cities are destroyed by terrorists and superheroes, but nobody says a harsher word other than "goddammit" or "f***." But if you would blanch at any of your kids hearing a graphic version of the infamous "Aristocats" joke, DO NOT take them to see this movie! "Starting to see pictures now, aren't you?"

Though I don't care for Tarantino or his movies, I decided to check it out on Christmas day, and I really enjoyed it. The movie was much funnier than I expected, and the three hours flew by. Definitely agree about Goggins. I imagine he drew inspiration for the Mannix character from his portrayal of Boyd Crowder on "Justified." I thought Jennifer Jason Leigh's performance was very underrated. Many of her best moments were non-verbal when she was in the frame but not the focus of the scene.

I didn't get a John Wayne vibe from Russell's performance. Seemed more like a paranoid version of his Wyatt Earp. One thing that I didn't realize until later when reading about the making of movie was the supposed "The Thing" influence, which makes sense considering the story, the setting, and the composer of the score, though that's more in line with his western scores.

Yeah, the wide-release version won't have an intermission, or overture, or souvenir program. I think it's supposed to be 20 minutes shorter than the Roadshow 70mm version.

One thing that did surprised me, but really shouldn't have if I had thought about Tarantino's love for 70's exploitation films was...

Spoiler: show
...that after Ruth was poisoned to death, both Walter Goggins' "Chris Mannix" and Samuel L. Jackson's "Marquis Warren" end up being allies. Today, we are used to seeing "salt and pepper" action movies where the black and white heroes may be a little antogonistic towards each other, but they aren't really THAT much different. In the 70's, the white guy would be more openly racist that would be acceptable today. Also, keep in mind that Warren isn't exactly a saint. General Sandy Smithers may deserve to get plugged, but his son certainly didn't deserve to die the way he did. (Of course, that's assuming Warren is telling the truth about his manner of death. Wouldn't surprise me if Smithers, Jr. was just shot and the whole "blanket" story was made up on the spot just to get his father angry enough to reach for the gun.) That two morally questionable people of different races can become allies and friends while fighting a common enemy comes right out of the 70's.

Regarding the Mannix character...

Spoiler: show
...do we ever find out if he really IS the sheriff-elect of Red Rock? His last words in the movie imply that he is, but for most of the film I was as skeptical of his claims as John Ruth was.

Thank God for DVD Screeners!
I liked this movie a lot. Great 3 hours. It had me on my toes the whole time trying to figure out what was going on. You know right off the bat things aren't what they seem, but to keep a lid on things until the actual reveal? That's hard to do and Tarantino pulled it off.

We saw it last night in 70mm and it does look glorious on the big screen, a real throwback to the great 60s and 70s Westerns.
It does keep your interest for the full 3 hours which flew by and did include the much needed intermission.

A nice touch was you get a program prior to the show when you buy your ticket and tickets were $10 each, pretty reasonable.

It is a great character study on the motives of each character and there are many twists and turns. Performances are all top notch and it was great to see Kurt Russell once again on a big screen in a role bigger than life.

Only downside might be Tarantino's reliance on over the top violence after such quiet and steady build ups but that's what he does in almost every movie.

It is a must see on the big screen.

And a thank you to Jimbo who treated me to the movies last night on LI instead of the usual NYC experience.

My pleasure. Always a great time seeing a movie with John, who is well-versed in cinema, not to mention rock music.
