Dusty Rhodes passes away

WWE is deeply saddened that Virgil Runnels, aka “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes — WWE Hall of Famer, three-time NWA Champion and one of the most captivating and charismatic figures in sports entertainment history — passed away today at the age of 69.

Runnels became a hero to fans around the world thanks to his work ethic, his impassioned interviews and his indomitable spirit. Moreover, Runnels was a dedicated father to WWE Superstars Goldust (Dustin Runnels) and Stardust (Cody Runnels), a caring husband and a creative visionary who helped shape the landscape of WWE long after his in-ring career had ended.

WWE extends its sincerest condolences to Runnels’ family, friends and colleagues.

RIP to "The American Dream".

Here's Dusty in one of my favourite storylines of the seventies, the "Cowboy" Ron Bass heel turn:

This is a huge punch in the gut.

One of the best promo cutters of all time, hands down. The "Hard TImes" promo alone is Hall Of Fame material.

I had tears well up when I read the announcement. Not many people in the business who were as entertaining and fun to watch.

R.I.P. Dream

I've had his DVD sitting on my shelf unwatched for years now. Maybe it's time to crack open the plastic.

I almost made a flippant remark about a player for the New York Giants with the same name, but just because I didn't know THIS Dusty Rhodes doesn't mean that others on this thread did and don't mourn him. May this Dusty rest in peace.

Real wrestling? Well, not really. We never see a bionic elbow in the Olympics, after all...

The WWE always does a nice job on their tribute videos. I could have waited many more years to have seen this one. The ending is a real tear jerker.

They showed that video on the Money in the Bank pre show tonight and then were supposed to cut to Renee Young. She was crying so much they wouldn't show her, just had her voice breaking apart and snifling. When they finally showed her a few minutes later her eyes were red and still full of tears.

Then when the actual PPV started, they had a 10 bell salute with all the wrestlers on the stage. So much crying from everyone, guys and girls. You can see just how much Dusty meant to them. Especially all the wrestlers who came up from NXT. Dusty taught the promo class and so many have come out and said how much he helped them.

A true representative of classic wrestling. A huge departure from today's giant, buffed and cut 'roided out muscle men. Him only being 69 kind of shocks me. When I used to watch him in the '70's while visiting my grandparents down in Florida, I kind of assumed he was already around 50. He never exactly looked healthy....but he was Hulk Hogan before Hulk Hogan. He WAS the American Dream. R.I.P.

In Steve Austin's autobio, he laments the bodybuilder era of wrestling and points out that wrestlers like Rhodes and Hardley Race, huge draws with giant fanbases, would never have been stars under the McMahon criteria for babyface headliners.

Dusty's son Cody posted the eulogy that he read at the funeral.
