Description
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of Caravan's seminal 'Canterbury' offering, In The Land Of Grey And Pink, the album has been reissued as a three-disc, deluxe edition.

Alongside a new remaster of the original mix and several rarities (both audio and visual), the multi-track master tapes have been remixed in stereo and 5.1 surround by Steven Wilson.

The booklet includes many rare period photographs and an informative Mark Powell essay.

Disc one features the original album newly remastered by Paschal Byrne at The Audio Archive plus three new Stereo mixes by Steven Wilson.

Disc two features two previously unreleased versions of It Doesn't Take A Lot and Nigel Blows A Tune plus four non-album tracks remixed by SW. Disc two also includes three songs recorded live for BBC radio's Sounds of the Seventies - Love To Love You, Love Song Without Flute and In The Land Of Grey And Pink plus two songs recorded live for John Peel's Sunday Concert which included a superb cover version of Soft Machine's Feelin', Reelin', Squealin' and Caravan's epic Nine Feet Underground.

3 CDs ?

Probably the Mono version and a CD of the usual out-takes and BBC sessions.

This is the 3rd time this has been issued on CD.

From Steve Wilson's webpage:

Amazon have now listed the 3 disc edition of Caravan's In the Land of Grey and Pink, so I guess it's now official - this is out in June on Universal. I don't know the exact track listing, but I did a new stereo mix and a 5.1 mix, plus mixed a whole slew of out-takes and alternate versions from the master tapes. By the way, this is not the "very famous 70's progressive album" I referred to in my earlier post (I wouldn't describe Caravan as very famous, though I personally love them).

Steve doing a 5.1 mix of this great prog album? oh boy! And how about that "very famous 70's prog album" he's also working on?

Thank God for Steve Wilson! :D

He is truly amazing at surround sound. He seems to consistently know where to put everything in the mix. A lot of surround producers/engineers just separate various sounds into different speakers, but the overall sound doesn't work. I'm definitely in on this Caravan reissue if it includes a Steven Wilson 5.1 mix.

"By the way, this is not the "very famous 70's progressive album" I referred to"

If I had to guess, I'd say he is referring to Yes' Fragile.

JoeBase, I understand it to be Tull's "Aqualung". Rumour is that ELP maybe forthcoming as well.
One can hope. :ohyes:

yep, that famous album he was talking about turns out to be "Aqualung".
Not sure if he will also do ELP.

REVIEW

**** out of *****

I agree with other reviews about the sticker across the cover instead of the usual slip case, they are trying to save money all the time.
The music inside is what counts and it has never sounded better. I was very happy with the 5.1 mix. It is up to the usual Steven Wilson standards with the instruments well balanced in the mix and sounding great!

The booklet does contain some great info and is a nice read.
The bonus material is enjoyable as is the 2 additional video clips. I can't complain about the price for what you get.

The Caravan "In The Land of Grey & Pink" 3-disc set & the Black Sabbath "Born Again" 2-disc set both arrived today, and I'll play them tonight. In both cases, removing Universal's wraparound sticker peeled off part of finish from the packaging, in the case of the Black Sabbath, surprisingly, since the package was printed on semi-matte paper.

No, it's Dolby Digital. It still sounds good, IMO, but that might be more a function of Wilson's surround mixes. I haven't listened to the stereo mixes on the DVD.

So the 2.0 is Dolby also? That would probably explain why I didn't pay attention to this one when it came out.

This release has some of the worst sound quality imaginable!

The DD data compression wrangles the mix!

They should have treated this one a lot better...
