Singer Joe Cocker, best known for his cover of the Beatles' With A Little Help From My Friends, has died aged 70.

The singer song-writer from Sheffield had a career lasting more than 40 years with hits including You Are So Beautiful and Up Where We Belong.

His agent Barrie Marshall confirmed that he had died of an undisclosed illness.

He said he was "simply unique" and "it will be impossible to fill the space he leaves in our hearts."

Known for his gritty voice, Cocker began his singing career in the pubs and clubs of Sheffield in the 1960s before hitting the big time.

He was propelled to pop stardom when his version of The Beatles' With A Little Help from My Friends reached number one.

His duet with Jennifer Warnes, Up Where We Belong - from An Officer And A Gentleman - hit number one and went on to win both a Grammy and an Academy Award.

He was honoured with an OBE in 2007.

Last year he broke all his own records in arenas across Europe, with a number one album in Germany and what was to be his final concert in Hammersmith, London, in June.

This is really bumming me out. As a teenager, I had a fine tradition of stealing my dad's records when he wasn't paying attention (they only went as far as my room upstairs). Mad Dogs and Englishmen was one of the first records I stole, along with Hey Jude.

Damn. :sigh:

That's very sad news. He had one one of the all-time great voices. Only saw him once, at the ARMS Benefit Concert at Madison Square Garden in 1983. I don't remember much about his performance since that night was all about Clapton, Beck and (especially) Page, but I recall being thrilled that he was part of the lineup for that show.

RIP, Mr. Cocker.

A legend.

To me one of the highlights of the Woodstock movie

His Mad Dogs & Englishmen vid/lp was great...

The Blue Medley: I'll Drown in My Own Tears/When Something Is Wrong?I've Been Loving You Too Long - is the ultimate medley IMO.

I still have to get the expanded MD&E set that came out years ago.

I think he invented the air guitar...John Belushi did a great Joe Cocker.

I remember reading last year that Billy Joel asked folks to pray for Joe Cocker and make a push to get him in the HOF.

Cancer is tough - and lung cancer is one of the worst...

If you smoke - please stop. If you are thinking about starting...don't.

Joe Cocker - RIP.

Very sad. RIP, Joe.

Just a snipped of the Belushi-Cocker duet...
