This sucks. Craig Ferguson is my favorite late night host. He announced tonight that he's leaving his show at the end of the year. I'll definitely miss it - it's not like any other late night show.

Damn.

Craig Ferguson to leave 'Late Late Show'

More changes in CBS’ late-night lineup: Less than two weeks after it was announced that Stephen Colbert would replace David Letterman on The Late Show, Craig Ferguson will now leave The Late Late Show, the CBS talker he’s hosted for 10 years.

Ferguson told his studio audience Monday that he will step down in December. Ferguson’s contract, like Colbert’s with Comedy Central, expires in 2015.

He had this to say in a statement: “CBS and I are not getting divorced, we are ‘consciously uncoupling,’ but we will still spend holidays together and share custody of the fake horse and robot skeleton, both of whom we love very much.”

“During his 10 years as host, Craig has elevated CBS to new creative and competitive heights at 12:30,” CBS chair Nina Tassler said in a statement. “He infused the broadcast with tremendous energy, unique comedy, insightful interviews and some of the most heartfelt monologues seen on television. Craig’s versatile talents as a writer, producer, actor and comedian speak to his great days ahead. While we’ll miss Craig and can’t thank him enough for his contributions to both the show and the Network, we respect his decision to move on, and we look forward to celebrating his final broadcasts during the next eight months.”

The Scotland-born host earned Emmy and Peabody noms for hosting The Late Late Show, an irreverent program that was meant to buck the traditional late-night format. Ferguson eschewed a co-host and went with a talking robot, and his studio “band” was hidden behind a curtain. Two guys in a horse costume would routinely run on stage to get laughs.

Ferguson’s brand of talk made it fun for celebrities who had the gift of gab and hard for those who weren’t particularly funny. Ferguson doesn’t like to prepare questions and would routinely go in unexpected directions with his guests, often with great results.

In addition to hosting the show and performing stand-up comedy, Ferguson has written two books: Between the Bridge and the River, a novel, and American on Purpose, a memoir.

Craig Ferguson: ‘I Wanted to Leave the Show Before I Stopped Enjoying It’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Craig Ferguson is relieved — he’s been wanting to let people know of his plan to move on from “The Late Late Show” for months.

The CBS latenight host also is resigned to the fact that few people will believe his assertion that he began thinking about ending his run on the show as long as two years ago, but he re-upped after CBS persuaded him to stick around a little longer. Early this year, he began laying the groundwork for his exit, before he had any idea that Letterman was preparing to announce his plan to retire in 2015.

“It wasn’t contentious. I was just like, ‘I feel like I’m done,’ ” Ferguson told Variety. “We were all fine and were tying up loose ends. And then Dave surprised everybody with the (April 3) announcement and that threw a spanner in the works. And I had to sit and keep my mouth shut while speculation raged wildly.”

Ferguson initially planned to sign off this summer, but CBS asked him to stay until December to give them more time to set a replacement. Ferguson agreed because it gives his staff and crew more time to find new gigs.

“It’s an inevitable thing when David announced his retirement, people are going to say ‘Oh he’s leaving because of that.’ No matter what I say or what I do, they’re gonna say that. Well they can say what they like. It’s America. I understand.”

The simple fact is, Ferguson wanted to move on before the work became a chore. He’s proud of the show and how oddball it is — with a robot skeleton and stuffed horse for sidekicks. But he has “ideas” for new things and is engaged with the various projects that his Green Mountain West production banner is developing for Science Channel and Discovery. And he’s got a new gig starting in the fall as host and producer of the syndie gameshow “Celebrity Name Game.”

“Ten years is a very long time in one job — for me,” he said. “I wanted to leave the show before I stopped enjoying it. That was my goal. I didn’t want it to be a chore….The whole idea is that show business should have some adventure to it, I think. It’s not about knowing what you’re doing day in and day out, year after year.”

Another latenight talk show is highly unlikely, despite the vacancy that’s about to open up at Comedy Central when “The Colbert Report” wraps. “I don’t know if I would ever do a latenight talkshow (again). It just doesn’t feel like that’s the way I’m headed,” he said.

Ferguson reiterated, as he has in interviews over the years, that taking over the 11:35 p.m. slot from Dave was never his ambition. But again, he accepts that people will view this as a he-doth-protest-too-much situation.

“I had no desire — none — to do that job,” Ferguson said. “I could barely keep it together at 12:30, never mind 11:30. Nobody wants to hear it. It’s so bizarre. People want it to be Jay and Dave or Jay and Conan or some kind of big story. That’s not me, that’s not what I want. I think what happens is that certain people want you to want it, and they want you to not get it. If that makes ‘em happy, well…It really wasn’t what I aspired to. Doing this job wasn’t something I aspired to, either. I kind of fell into this.”

But what about the reports that Ferguson’s last contract included a clause that calls for him to see an eight-figure payout if he was not chosen as Letterman’s successor? Ferguson paused, and then cited words of advice from a seasoned Scottish comedian, Johnny Beattie, who befriended him years ago.

“He told me, ‘There’s two things we never discuss: Wages and ages.’ So I think I’m gonna stick to that.”

It's the only late night show I have an interest in any more. I'll watch the beginning of Fallon on Fridays for Thank You Notes, but unless there's someone I want to see, I don't watch any of the shows except Craigyferg. I don't care who he has on, I watch.

And so far, only a couple of the names in the idle speculation spark any interest for me. I'll have to wait and see what happens.

Man, I'm gonna miss this show.

Totally agree!! Really sorry to see his show end. Don't think he could ever have taken his brand to 11:30, and I wouldn't have wanted him to change to do so. Will be very interested to see what he does next. Whatever it is, I wish him the best, and I'll be watching. This is still a bitter pill to swallow!!

Well, that's it. It's over. Damn.

But I have to say, pretty good way to go out. They opened with one last musical number. And they brought back a lot of the recurring characters from over the years, including Sid the Rabbit, and tons of guests. They showed Josh Robert Thompson, the voice of Geoff. Great number.

The monologue wasn't, but it was a nice, heartfelt appreciation of the audience, guests and crew. Frankly, it was very reminiscent of the kind of thing Craig hasn't done in quite a while. The e-mail segment featured one last "Who's that at the door?", a new character (Pipey McPiperson) and a phone call from Bill Cosby.

Jay Leno struck me as an odd choice for the final guest, but it really worked - it pretty well capsulized Craig's style over the years. It was two guys having a conversation, not a guy being interviewed. And credit where it's due - Jay had a great story about not really paying attention to guests.

All too soon, it was time for What Did We Learn Over The Last 10 Years, Craig? And that led to the closing bit - the unmasking of Secretariat.

Spoiler: show
Secretariat took off his head and turned out to be...Bob Newhart. Which faded into a remake of the final scene of Newhart, with Nigel Wick waking up next to Drew Carey. Nicely done. With a nod to the endings of St. Elsewhere and The Sopranos.

I wasn't on board from the beginning of the show, but I've been there for most of it, and I'm going to miss it. A lot. I'll give the new guy a chance - I may even love the new show - but this show will always have a special place in my heart. I was fortunate enough to watch a good 15 years or so of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and Craig Ferguson is the only host who I think lived up to that legacy. I was a huge Letterman fan when he was at 12:30, but I think his show lost a bit of zip when he moved to 11:30 and CBS. For my money, since Carson, nobody can touch Craig Ferguson in late night.

I'll still watch some Celebrity Name Game episodes, and whatever form his next show takes, I'll be there. And I'll go see him do standup just about any time I can. But I'm going to miss this (well, except for the episodes on my DVR - I have to find a way to get them off to DVD or something someday).
