Listening to Aerosmith's "Dream On" and I got to feeling this song is really timeless -- I think it'd appeal to old rockers and young kids alike.

What are some other ones?

It's my experience in concert-going that 70s classic rock still appeals to a wide spectrum of listeners. The dinosaur bands that I see attract a surprising number of younger fans, and it's the 70s stuff that really gets people on their feet. Even Paul McCartney goes about 50/50 Beatles to 70s, almost nothing from his 80s (and later) oeuvre.

This is very true. Classic rock radio stations continue to thrive over the decades, mostly playing the same songs by the same artists for 30+ years. It's impossible to deny the broad mass appeal of that stuff. You still see kids today with Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and the like T-shirts. It's not my kind of music, but I'm weird, with screwed up off the wall tastes. :) To me, timeless is the Smiths or Delta Blues.

I think we're all tip-toeing around the obvious answer: The Devil Went Down to Georgia.

If it's still being played on the radio twenty years or more after it was released, then it's timeless for all practical purposes - or as 'timeless' as anything can be in the context of popular music. I'm sure people in the 1920's thought George Gershwin's stuff was timeless, but tastes change, etc. It does seem like rock (as a genre) has lasted way, way longer than anyone expected it to.

WCBS-FM, which has been NYC's oldies station for decades, has risen to #1 in the market playing a mix of 70s and 80s hits. They've almost completely dropped stuff from the 60s, outside of the Beatles.

How ironic that the "modern rock" of the 80s is now oldies fodder.

"Dark Was The Night" by Blind Willie Johnson;an astonishing record.
All great music is timeless. No matter how music evolves,a record like "West End Blues" will always sound great.

There's an oldies station here that, when it started off, had this whole slogan about how they would never play anything recorded after 1989.

About three years in, they started playing some Nirvana, and the odd Sheryl Crow song...then some more recent Bon Jovi stuff, some early Foo Fighters....I suppose it's inevitable that the rules about what an 'oldie' is change as new generations of people come along.
