http://classicrock.teamrock.com/news/20 ... lin-shadowJimmy Page: Solo album won’t live in Led Zep’s shadow 09/10/2014 ~ by Martin Kielty Guitarist promises surprises in project planned for next year
Jimmy Page has stockpiled a stack of material for a solo album – and insists it won’t be overshadowed by his Led Zeppelin catalogue, because he faced that challenge down with the band’s 2007 reunion show.
The guitarist has already said he’s turning this thoughts to putting a band together for a recording and touring project next year.
Page says in the latest edition of Classic Rock, on sale now: “There is pressure – but you have to put it in context with putting your arse on the line for one night at the O2. What sort of pressure is that? You can imagine that it was like for one shot.
“When you’re recording an album you’ve got more than one shot at the solo. You have to look at it like that.”
He argues: “New music is new music. It has to be good; it has to be vital; it has to connect with people. It doesn’t want to be limp and half-hearted. That’s what you’re doing – you’re a musician. You’re not thinking about whether it’s paling in the shade of Led Zeppelin. What sort of nonsense is that?”
Page says his new material will be “a summing up of where I am at this point of time” and adds: “It’s got various moods to it, various textures. There will be real surprises in it. There would have to be; I wouldn’t be happy about it unless there was.”
The full interview appears in Classic Rock 203, on sale now, also featuring Rainbow, Prince, Billy Idol, Taj Mahal, Suzi Quatro and more, plus a free 15-track CD of Zeppelin-style music from some of the best new bands around.
If your newsagent isn't selling issue 203 of Classic Rock, you can order it online from MyFavouriteMagazines. Alternatively you can download the Classic Rock magazine app from iTunes. Also: for this month only, customers buying copies of Classic Rock in branches of Asda will save £1 off the normal retail price.

He's had this album on the way since before the Zep reunion in 2007.
I'll believe it when I see it, and if it ever happens let's hope it beats Outrider.

Pete, I agree with your 'I'll believe it when I see it" sentiment, but I really liked Outrider. It wasn't groundbreaking but I thought a lot of the songs were excellent, especially the bluesy ones with Chris Farlowe. Seeing him on that tour at The Ritz (now Webster Hall) in NYC was an incredible experience. Would love to see him do another solo album and tour some theaters playing Zeppelin AND solo material.

The tour was dynamite Rich, but Outrider wasn't very good.
A few songs clicked, but it just didn't have the writing.
I'd see Page and a band solo for sure though based on his playing with Zep in 2007, but it's been 7 years.

Pete, this is a rare instance where we'll agree to disagree, as I love "Outrider" and think the writing is very good. I also like that he used three different singers and included some instrumentals, so it had a really diverse sound.
I agree with your skepticism about how he might be playing guitar 7 years after the Zeppelin O2 show. Hopefully he's been practicing while working on the Zeppelin reissues.

short of jones, plant and bonham (jason) playing on it, i can't even imagine buying anything jimmy page does at this point.
IMHO, the single biggest waste of talent in rock and roll history.
second biggest waste of talent: CSNY fighting and not playing together for so long.

(hennemusic) Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page says he is planning on recording his first solo album in almost thirty years in 2016 and he says that he wants to also play live again next year.
"Next year I'm just going to working on the guitar, it's time for me to go out there and do a solo album - my last solo album was 1988," Page told BANG Showbiz at the recent Classic Rock Roll Of Honour Awards in London. "I haven't really milked the situation; it's time to do another one. I'm known for playing many styles of guitar, and I need to re-visit all the different styles I can play."
Page plans to start the project as an instrumental effort before considering adding other players, including a lead vocalist. "I'm not thinking about singers, I'm thinking of an instrumental thing - I want to work with my strengths rather than my weaknesses," he explains. "I want to work with myself, I want to get myself up and running and once I'm ready I'll think about whether I need someone to sing on the music."
The Led Zeppelin mastermind says he'll follow-up the project with a return to the stage. "I want to be playing live again, but that won't be until next year. I've planned all this a while ago," says Page. "I want to start in the UK. I've got ideas but I want to wait to see what happens. I'd like to do Glastonbury. I could do a sort of karaoke night with Led Zeppelin songs."

as a John Miles fan, i wonder if JP will be using any guest vocalists on this - if/when it materializes.

An instrumental thing would be good to hear. If it's a total departure from Zep he wants, then not having a singer on it to compare with Plant would go a long way towards stopping those comparisons before they even start.

Didn't he do an instrumental solo album in the 80's (& I'm not speaking of the Kenneth Anger soundtrack)?

It's possible I missed it - I was listening to LOTS of stuff in the 80's. If there is one, I'd like to hear it. Still, any new stuff from the people of that particular generation always gets my attention - I'll get whatever album he releases...if he releases one.

I think I was thinking about Outrider. My bad if there were vocals. It's not a record I spent much time with.

ted262 wrote: Both Outrider and the Death Wish II soundtrack had vocal tracks as I recall. Outrider had Robert Plant (one song I think), John Miles (two songs) and Chris Farlowe (3 songs) singing and Miles did the tour. Death Wish II I have not heard for years but I know Farlowe sings on that one too including the awesome "Who's to Blame?". Both albums also had instrumentals.

Quote: Jimmy Page Guarantees ‘Stuff’ From Him in 2019
Jimmy Page has spent the last few years working on various Led Zeppelin-related projects, but with all those out of the way for now, he's about to concentrate on his own work. In a new interview, he promised something coming from him outside of Led Zeppelin in 2019.
"Yes, you'll definitely be getting stuff from Jimmy Page," he told Mark Goodman on SiriusXM Volume's Debatable show (embedded above). "I can guarantee that."
He didn't provide further specifics, but it's possible that it could be a box set devoted to Coverdale / Page, the 1993 record he made with Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale. Back in March, Coverdale told Eddie Trunk that both had been approached by label executives about revisiting that record, and that they were in favor of it. Coverdale added that there are several unreleased songs and video footage from the entire project that could be fashioned into a documentary. A problem, however, was in finding a moment when both had free time to work on it.
Page has also spoken for years about a new solo album. In 2016, he admitted that it's "taken a long time" for him to work on new material because, "I want to do it properly,. And there will be surprises — that’s what I’ve done all the way through my career, really."
The past February, he spoke of his desire to record something new, although he stopped short of providing specifics.
“I intend to be doing something which obviously will surface as a sort of album somewhere,” he said. “It'll surface further on down the line; I'm looking forward to doing whatever the project is. But if you think about all the areas that I've attempted, guitar, whether it's acoustic or electric or whatever, all the different approaches that I've done, it's just gonna be an extension of all of that, and that's it. So it's not just acoustic, it's not just electric, it's everything I can muster up.” http://www.ultimateclassicrock.com/jimmy-page-2019

Wasn't there some sort of guarantee from Jimmy for 2018 as well? Or was it 2017? Or was it both?

actually it has gone beyond the joking stage.
jimmy has more shit than the chicago stockyards (as we used to say in grade school).
those jokes he reissued a couple of years ago for exorbitant prices with all the "new unreleased material" were just that, jokes.
what did it end up being 2 'new" songs and a ton of unfinished demos and click tracks?
then the 'new" album he was working on.
then the book.
and larry is right, it's going on 2 years now he has been repeating the same things, he likes to hear himself talk and see his name in the news.
in all seriousness, i question whether the guy can even play guitar anymore.
