He should have his own topic instead of buried in bb chatter - IMO

If ever there was a man who seemly was everywhere - Brooklyn Dodgers/New York Met (original)/Chicago Cubs/Bosox/Yanks/Padres/Reds/Senators/Rangers/D-Rays.
Direct link between Jackie Robinson (a team mate) and Derek Jeter (whom he coached)/married on the baseball field/metal plate in his head since a beaning in 1953/stood up for Billy Martin in one of the near firings back so long ago/got into that skufflle with Pedro.

He was bseball. A man who one could not help but like. RIP.

You're absolutely right, Robert. Thanks for starting the thread.

Reading the tributes ths morning touched my heart. The man was ALL baseball.

Class act in Tampa....third base coach Tom Foley wearing a Zimmer jersey in tribute.

I just loved Popeye. Joe Giiardi was breaking up talking about him last night. A true baseball man, no wait, a true man.

Zimmer is the kind of guy you'd like to have a beer with at a bar late at night discussing baseball.

Mike & Mike talked about some of the events Don Zimmer was tied to in his career - in uniform for the only Brooklyn Dodgers World Series championship, in uniform at all thee perfect games at Yankee Stadium, married at home plate, etc. I wish I'd gotten that list.

I loved Don Zimmer. He played a big part in establishing baseball here in Tampa and I once got to talk to him during a pre-season game. A very "real" person. Still have the Mets baseball card somewhere I'm sure as well.

Say hello to all our hero's in the Field of Dreams for us Don. Enjoy your games.

In his ghostwritten 1984 book "Balls", Graig Nettles told a story about how Zimmer being kicked out of a game when he was coaching for the Yankees; I need to dig out my copy to find the exact quote, but according to Nettles, Zimmer confronted a rookie umpire who then asked him a question along the lines of "Who the hell are you?" Zimmer's reported response has been burned in my memory for years: "Get some time in the league and you'll find out who I am, you bush c*#$@*&$*r!"

He never received a paycheck from any employer other than professional baseball. RIP.

He was baseball. RIP.

I hope when I'm in my 70s I'll still feel like mixing it up with some punk 40 years my junior, even if I do wind up flat on my face.

(One of the most unnecessary apologies in baseball.)
