Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan has signed with Verve Records and will release her eighth studio album -- titled "Shine On" -- May 6.
Tonight (Jan. 30) the Lilith Fair founder will appear on NBC's "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" to perform a new song titled "Beautiful Girl." Although this marks its television premiere, the song has already been performed in concert. Check it out in the video below:
In a press release, McLachlan revealed that the album was inspired by her father's passing and her own appreciation of life:
"This album is about moving through the second half of my life in a more mindful and meaningful way, recognizing that every day, every moment is precious and though we all have our issues and problems, our damages, we all have the ability to continue to learn, grow from our experiences, thrive and shine on. Many of the songs are inspired at least partially or wholly by my father's passing three years ago and the profound effect losing him had on me. I had to find my footing again without the anchor of his unconditional love."
Previously with Nettwerk/Arista, McLachlan's "Shine On" will be her first studio effort since 2010's "Laws of Illusion," which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. On signing McLachlan, Verve Music Group chairman David Foster comments, "Sarah's captivating voice and undeniable talent has established her as a celebrated global artist with an ability to reach fans on a deeply emotional level."
McLachlan is a three-time Grammy winner and an eight-time winner of Canada's Juno Awards. Her 1997 album "Surfacing" produced a pair of Grammy-winning tracks: "Building a Mystery" (Best Female Pop Vocal Performance) and "Last Dance" (Best Pop Instrumental Performance).
In other recent McLachlan news, the singer-songwriter previewed a lighthearted Super Bowl ad for Audi, which references her tearjerking ASPCA endorsements:

Wow, new label, new band (same producer). Should be interesting. While I own the entire catalog, she's never come close to equaling Solace, Solace Live & Fumbling & those were 10 years ago.

That add was one of the better ones ( & THE MOST surprising one) of the day.

It's not too bad. A bit more upbeat than "Beautiful Girl". Really looking forward to the new album. I also found out that yesterday that my wife bought me tickets to see Sarah in concert this summer in northern Virginia, just outside of DC. Can I actually believe that if i buy the Target edition I'll have everything released for this cd????? That is not how Nettwerk (Sarah's Canadian record company AND management) operates. Has anyone heard about Japanese exclusives, I-Tunes Exclusives, etc?

On first listen, this feels like her best album in years (though Illusion was also better than the last couple before it) & the first "bonus track" is the best song on the album, so i suggest the "DE".

far from my favorite collection of hers, but better than the last one. tracks 5 and 6 are worth the price of admission, in my opinion; with airy and sweepingly warm arrangements. if only the entire collection could have been done with this mindset. track 11 is reminiscent of "ice cream" - but it's quite good in its own fashion.
and the Target bonus tracks are probably better than several of the standard ones.

Afterglow would be the one I like the least; & other than Building A Mystery (which I love), Surfacing would be the one I like the 2nd least. I'm also not real fond of Freedom Sessions. Fumbling, Solace, the first live ep (Canada release from the Solace tour) & Touch are my favs in that order.

well... it's NOT a yawn-fest, but i find few tracks worthwhile: say... 5 and 6. track 11 is reminiscent of "ice cream" and is a copacetic listen as well. but tracks 5 and 6 are just lovely in both composition and arrangement - worth the price of admission.

Banned!?! Hey...
I'm definitely digging several of the songs. Really like "The Sound That Love Makes" with the ukulele.
I've been trying catch (either live or online) some of the performances she's made supporting this album. Love the acoustic versions she did on Studio Q. (Sorry, posting from work, can't provide the youtube links. You'll have to use your Google-Fu...)
