I've been a Marvel fan all my life and can give an opinion of some kind about just about every writer that worked from 1961 to 1980 or so. ..except Len Wein! I don't know why this is except perhaps there isn't a particular run he did on Marvel comics that I could point to and say this is great, like I can do with for example Marv Wolfman on Daredevil. I know Swamp Thing by repute but have never read it beyond the first issue which I once owned. If I was looking for a great Wein run on Marvel, where should I start? Is It fair to say he did his best work for DC?

His best stuff was probably his Justice League and Swamp Thing runs for DC. I have fond memories of his time on Blue Beetle with Paris Cullins, too.

I think he's one of those guys who's above average but not great. Seldom anything will jump out at you, but neither will it repulse you. Of course we all know his importance to the industry; Alan Moore would never have had a career without him. Quite so.

Yes. His run on Justice League was exceptional.

At Marvel, I'd say his Hulk was the best thing he did. Well done, but not exceptional.

I used to have the original 13 issue run, but I gave them away with the rest of my stuff a year back. None were autographed though.

Len was my mentor on the Hulk. I still think he tricked me into taking it over.

He also wrote a good, non-psychotic Batman. This should be a good collection ...

Wein's Batman run is one of my favorites, for sure. I did not know about this book.

It's not available on Amazon yet, but I'm definitely getting it. Other than the Archie Goodwin one, I'm getting all of those "Tales of the Batman" and Legends hardcovers. The Goodwin one is essentially double dipping by DC since many of the stories (if not all) are already collected in other Batman books in this series.

He created Swamp Thing so he could entice Alan Moore to write American comics and do something worthwhile with the character, forever changing everything. The man is a genius.

I don't think it's fair to blame Len for Alan Moore.

He blames himself.

I read his Hulk stories in the seventies. As you mostly say, they were ok but nothing exceptional that I remember. Certainly Uncle Rog's comics were an immediate step up in quality, from what I remember. I do remember The House That Haunted Batman as a little gem of a story though. I didn't read much DC because it wasn't available where I lived:I found that story with its glorious Adams art in a reprint when I was on holiday.

Boring. But true.

That's good news about his Batman run being collected. With apologies to Roger Stern, he is my favourite Hulk scribe. Good runs on Spider-Man, JLA and Blue Beetle as well.

He lives with the guilt everyday, and to make up for it produces quality work forever.......

Alan Moore or Terry Long? What are we blaming him for?
