OK, where was I...the other day, I picked up "Beatles VI" and...it's an interesting mix of stuff, but nothing overly classic. Probably most notable for containing "Bad Boy".

And then yesterday, I checked out "Hey Jude". This was not an album I picked up on cassette back in the early 1990's, probably because I believe everything on it was on either "Past Masters" or "Rarities." I was surprised to learn--guess I had never really paid close attention--that "Can't Buy Me Love" and "I Should Have known Better" were on it. But it led me to try and figure out what pre-1967 songs were not on any of the albums on this set--I came up with six: "Misery", "There's A Place", and "Sie Leibt Dich" (all on Capital's "Rarities"), plus "I'm down", the original single version of "Love Me Do" (I think) and "From Me To You".

Am I getting this right?

Yuh gotta have faith, guys. Or Spock logic, one or the other. Universal paid 1.9 billion for EMI / The Beatles, they gotta sell a ton of stuff to break even before they sniff at any profits. They're gonna be releasing loads of stuff in the coming years, Let It Be will come out (eventually). Just look at all they've thrown out just recently, with the Mono LP box on the way for this year too... As Kevin Bacon said in Animal House, remain calm...

I think so. I'll take a look when I get home, but of the tracks you mentioned:

"Misery" & "There's A Place" had been issued in the US on Vee-Jay's Introducing The Beatles. They were released by Capitol in 1965 on a "Starline" single, but didn't get released on an LP by the label until 1980's Rarities.

"Sie Liebt Dich" was first released in the US as a single on the Swan label in 1964. It didn't get a Capitol LP release until Rarities.

The mono mix of "I'm Down" had been released by Capitol on the b-side of the "Help! single, but it wasn't mixed into stereo until 1976 for release on the Rock And Roll Music compilation album.

The original single version of "Love Me Do" (with Ringo on drums) had been replaced on the studio master tape with the album version (with Andy White on drums), and wasn't released on any LP until 1988 when it came out on Past Masters Volume 1, where it was sourced from a fairly clean copy of the original single.

"From Me To You" was first released on an LP in the US on Vee-Jay's Jolly What! The Beatles And Frank Ifield in 1964. It didn't appear on a Capitol LP until 1973's 1962-1966.

I do know that Capitol had released "A Hard Day's Night" as a single, because of the contract with United Artists which held that Capitol couldn't release it on an LP for a certain length of time (I forget how long), so it didn't get released on a Capitol LP until 1962-1966, and even then they used the re-channeled "fake" stereo mix from the UA LP (despite the fact that it had been released in true stereo in the UK). The stereo mix wasn't released in the US until 1982's Reel Music.

Yep. I remember well that those missing songs were a mystery (and mostly unknown) to me at the time I first collected all the Beatles albums (1969 - about 1972).

Now I've gone and done it--I was in Barnes & Noble this afternoon, and on the bargain rack I found a hardcover copy of Mark Lewisohn's "Complete Recording Sessions" for $12.98. I checked this out of the library once upon a time--it was actually quite readable. Now I have my very own copy. Give Lewisohn credit--twenty-five years later, it remains a cornerstone for Beatle research.

About $95.79 US. We're getting into tempting territory!

yep, that's what I thought....it would get below that $100 threshold. Not sure if its because it isn't selling or was way over priced to start with ($160 is crazy territory).

I 've already purchased 4 individual titles, but at this price I'm in.

There's going to come a time (not sure if I'll be alive then or not) where the Beatles will be like Frank Sinatra is today: retailer's can't give his music away.

I'm not going to say Sinatra was anywhere as good as the Beatles (I can't stand him or his music), but he was just as popular in his time.

That's nuts. The Beatles could issue a bag of air with their name on it and it would debut on the Billboard charts.

Thy said that about Sinatra not that long ago................. it's our generation & Gen X that's buying the fab 4 over & over again. Don't get me wrong: I LOVE The Beatles; but as a retailer I can tell you that our generation doesn't really matter demographically anymore except to Depends & Geritol. And 99% of Gen X will stop buying 2024's equivalent of of mp3's by then.

That's cool. My point was sales. 10 years ago, Sinatra sold like hotcakes. Today I can't give his cd's away. The Beatles still sell like crazy. My point was, "but for how long"?

And for those who don't know, in the 40's Sinatra was as big as The Beatles were in the 60's. (Though I selected him as an example quite randomly without much thought).

A half century is a pretty good track record!

A friend loaned me his box set so that i can do a track-by-track comparison. I'm using the Purple Chick Deluxe Editions as my UK mix source and the Dr. Ebbetts needle-drops of the US albums. I'm only a few albums in, but there's already a few ... bizarre... surprises that don't seem to gibe with established thinking on the mixes used and/or tampered with on the Capitol records...

I should hopefully get my notes done by the end of the week.

Unfortunately, it's now back up to CDN$152.68 or about US $138. Guess I should have pulled the trigger. Hopefully it will be back below $100 in the not too distant future. I'll also be very interested in Fraxon!'s review by the end of this week!!
