From Rolling Stone:

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/ ... h-20140122

Last night, Rolling Stone caught up with Neil Young on his way into the Village recording studio, where he was accepting the President's Merit award at the Grammy Event of the Producers and Engineers Wing of the Recording Academy. We chatted for a couple of minutes on the red carpet about producers, studio technology and his next album.

What are some of your favorite pieces of technology?
Well, for a long time, I really liked the old microphones. I like old Neve boards. I liked Pacific Microsonics when they first came out, they were ahead of the curve. I think we're entering a very good period for recorded sound. Technology is just too much fun. It's so rewarding – it's what we do. What's next after digital?

Are there any other producers you admire?
I love them all. They all make music, okay? Some producers make great-sounding records, but it's not about the producer – it's the combination of the producer and the artist. So when there's chemistry, there's great music, and that makes great records.

Your next record's coming out in March?
Yeah, it's one of the lowest-tech experiences I've ever had.

How come?
You'll hear it. It's called A Letter Home.

More info on Neil's next release. If accurate I'll be getting this on day one!

It was recently reported that Neil Young and Jack White had worked together on an album of covers. It is not yet known if this album is 'A Letter Home'. Journalist Michael Goldberg "confirmed" the story writing on his blog, saying that Young had recorded an album at Jack White's Third Man studios in Nashville. Young is pictured above at Third Man in the store's novelty vinyl recording booth, which can.

According to Goldberg, Young and White made the "entire album together", with a prospective tracklist featuring Bob Dylan's 'Blowin' In The Wind', Tim Hardin's 'Reason To Believe', Gordon Lightfoot's 'Early Morning Rain' and Ivory Joe Hunter's 'Since I Met You Baby' as well as 'Needle Of Death', originally by the late Bert Jansch, a song which Young covered last year. The reports were later echoed on Neil Young fansite Thrasher's Wheat.

Both reports speculate that the album is a co-release by Young's label, Warner Bros, and White's Third Man Records. Earlier this month, Jack White said he was currently working on two different albums. "I'm producing two records this month, and finishing them," he wrote in an online chat. "One of them is mine."

I'm not real thrilled with the song list. Oh well......... Once he left the early period, I've almost always liked the NY albums the critics hated & vice versa! I could probably live with just Box Set #1 + 4 Way Street, Time Fades Away, Live Rust, Decade & parts of Tonight's The Night, Freedom & Greendale; though I own 4 times that much!

Though I'm not sure if ANYONE (critics or not) liked Americana?!

I have to admit with Porno on the way (sorry, I couldn't resist!), it's a bit odd that NY would do a vinyl only release. We may have to wait for Pono's launch for the digital version. Betcha we get TFA & Journey than also.

Neil Young's new covers record A Letter Home has been released through Jack White's Third Man records just in time for Record Store Day. There's been no formal anThe entire record - which includes covers of classic songs by Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and many others - was recorded in a refurbished 1947 Voice-o-Graph vinyl recording booth at Jack White's Third Man store in Nashville, Tenn. A message on Young's website describes the album as "an unheard collection of rediscovered songs from the past recorded on ancient electro-mechanical technology captures and unleashes the essence of something that could have been gone forever."

Here is a complete track listing:

1. "Changes" (Phil Ochs)

2. "Girl From The North Country" (Bob Dylan)

3. "Needle of Death" (Bert Jansch)

4. "Early Morning Rain" (Gordon Lightfoot)

5. "Crazy" (Willie Nelson)

6. "Reason To Believe" (Tim Hardin)

7. "On The Road Again" (Willie Nelson)

8. "If You Could Read My Mind" (Gordon Lightfoot)

9. "Since I Met You Baby" (Ivory Joe Hunter)

10. "My Hometown" (Bruce Springsteen)

11. "I Wonder If I Care As Much" (Everly Brothers)

Some of these covers have been in Young's setlist over the past few months, though he has yet to play "Girl From The North Country," "On The Road Again," "Crazy," "My Hometown" or "I Wonder If I Care As Much." Young will be spending much of his summer gigging around Europe with Crazy Horse.

Someone will get the vinyl and digitize it, convert it to FLAC or MP3, and post it to a Torrent site in the very near future. If it hasn't happened already. IMHO that is what you get when you don't supply the demand.
