I only know the hit single. Never owned the albums.
Me too, but it's a pretty great single. I'm hoping to hear some samples before I take the plunge, but I'm definitely interested. Lead singer Gayle McCormack has a nice cult following.

Gayle's first album is fab beyond words, and it's available out there somewhere on a UK reissue CD...
Durn burn, Rev-ola / Cherry Red Records UK is reissuing it yet again next week, Jan 6 2014. Amazon UK claims it's even remastered this time!
CD Description: As girl-about-LA and singer with the wonderful Smith, Gayle McCormick had it all. And here on her wonderful Lambert-Potter produced first album from 1971, you have it too! In the midst of producing The Four Tops, Evie Sands and Dusty Springfield, Lambert and Potter were on a roll, providing a glossy Hollywood take on Northern Soul which makes even the songs you might think are too well trodden absolutely vital! Possibly the best ever version of Superstar too and you know how good that means!
1. It's A Crying Shame 2. Superstar 3. C Est La Vie 4. A Natural Woman (You Make Me Feel Like) 5. You Really Got A Hold On Me 6. Rescue Me 7. If Only You Believe 8. Save Me 9. Everything Has Got To Be Free 10. Gonna Be Alright Now

Thank you, Sir Robin, I might need to check that one out.
In the meantime, I just listened to "Baby It's You" by Smith on YouTube to refresh my memory, and it is indeed one righteously rockin' tune, every bit as good as I remember.

pre-ordered, along with gene clark's "white light" CD and fireplace flame coloring pine cones. (60's acid metal) seriously though my wife likes them in the fireplace, makes the flames purple and blue and green....oh nevermind

I am in too! This is why I love this place - without ICE - this would have been under the radar for me.

I wish I knew what Universal was supplying Real Gone for Maria to 'remaster', especially given that Smith were signed to ABC/Dunhill. Real Gone have had some sonic misses for me. Oh, and I picked up the second album on CD a few months back.

The sound on this disc is pretty good, I think, although the production is dated. I'd never heard these albums before, just the single, but I'm finding them to be very enjoyable. Without Gayle McCormack's vocals, though, they're a pretty pedestrian early 70's rock band. But they try hard, and they do rock.
