Oops! I should mention I did not pay the 17.99 and DID use a B&N coupon of 20% which they accepted. My purchase was in-store. Forgot to mention that. D'oh!

So you're saying it's definitely worth $14.39?

It was worth 17.99. And it is certainly worth 14.39. The new Bowie book (David Bowie: Starman) is a really good one and a long one by the way. There's one or two others that are worthy as well, but a ton of crappy ones too.

Yes, B&N accepts the coupons on mags (usually - I had one problem with one). Borders only did that once or twice. But B&N is terribly frustrating w/mags. The store I hit most often never has Cycle Sport. But the next closest one always does. There are several other mags in a similar situation. The selection of music books is maddening, too (although Borders was equally as bad) - my usual store has a very tiny selection, but one nearly 40 minutes away in a much more rural setting has a much better selection (magazines, too).

I miss Borders terribly.

I bought the Bowie Uncut special edition today with that 20% off coupon. Can't resist a good deal. Looks pretty thorough. I'm looking forward to reading it at some point in the not too distant future, although I'm still working my way through special edition magazines on Zappa and Alice Cooper, as well as a slow slog through the Keith Richard autobiography. Just can't find enough time for reading these days.

Does anyone have a link to that Barnes & Noble coupon, please?

Let me know if this works:
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/email/pri ... ?pid=39037

The only catch is that you have to use an American Express card for your purchase. I found this coupon by doing a google search for "Barnes & Noble In-Store Coupons", so I would recommend trying that if the above link doesn't work.

I believe there is also a Mastercard only coupon referenced on the thread I posted.

I was in B&N today as they sent me a 15% coupon that expired today and I was surprised to see the new Ulitmate Music Guide collector's issue for The Clash.
This one was $12.50 before the coupon so that was more like it (It would've been around $13.40 or so w/ tax and ended up a little over $11 after the coupon). The Bowie was really high, but worth it, however, it should not have been as much as it was.
This Clash mag as always covers every album (and some solo stuff) and looks great.

I've been loving the Bowie special issue, even though it WAS priced way too high. Not only have the album reviews been helpful as I revisit his catalog for my blog, but the reprints of old articles & interviews have really been enlightening. I'm not a big enough Clash fan to buy the Uncut special issue, but I did see it at my B&N and wondered why the price was so much lower than the Bowie issue. I hope they do more of these on artists I love.

A few weeks ago, I picked up the "NME Icons - The Smiths" special collector's magazine , for $12.99 at Books-A-Million.

From the "makers of NME and Uncut", it's a mixed bag of period reviews / interviews, and newly-written essays and testimonials from musicians who were influenced by the group. Most of the reviews are poor attempts to be clever, too provincial by half, and not terribly interesting. It does not even provide a comprehensive discography of singles and b-sides, instead presenting a lame countdown of the "20 best flip-sides" which somewhat misses the mark.

Not recommended, unless you can find it at a good price, and are a fan of the flowery prose and bloated NME/Melody Maker style of journalism

The latest Ultimate Music Guide is on R.E.M.
I picked it up the other day-it's the normal price of 13.99 or so and I used a coupon knocking it down a few books. As well done as all the others.

New UNCUT "Ultimate Music Guide" Issue 11 features Paul Weller

Covers The Jam, The Style Council, and the solo years, and even includes the classic "Weller vs. Pete Townshend" interview from 1980

Thanks for the tip! I bought this right after you posted and there were only 2 copies left at B&N. I just finished reading it tonight and for ANY Kinks fan it was fantastic.

A further note-the new Ultimate Music Guide is of The Beatles and is out now in the UK-not sure if it's here yet.

The latest Uncut Ultimate Music Guide focuses on NICK CAVE, which I just picked up from B&N for $13.99. I'm very excited about this, since I'm planning on revisiting his catalog for my blog within the next year and these guides are very thorough & informative. Here's a link to the Uncut editor's announcement:

And here's what it looks like:

Didn't care about the last several of these, but I was in Barnes & Nobles today and saw the new one of Depeche Mode and grabbed it.

Looking forward to reading that one-how they are not in the Rock Hall Of Shame I do not know, but it IS a joke after all.

I also bought the DM issue when I was in B&N buying a guitar mag. I'm a big fan (just saw them) and can't resist a mag like that. :)
