Eric Clapton Unplugged Gets Amplifed

Published // 05.Sep.13

Expanded And Remastered Version Of Eric Clapton’s Multi-Grammy Winning, Diamond-Certified Album Features Unreleased Music And Previously Unseen Rehearsal Footage. Available Worldwide Mid-October 2013.

Eric Clapton was already an acknowledged master of the electric guitar in January 1992 when he traded his signature Stratocaster for an acoustic Martin to record Unplugged. The live album captured the legendary guitarist, backed by a small band, performing acoustic versions of his own songs and several blues standards. Released later that same year, the album was an unqualified blockbuster, selling more than 19 million copies worldwide and earning six Grammy Awards, sweeping the top honors, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year.

Reprise Records celebrates Clapton’s electrifying acoustic performances with a new 2-CD/DVD collection that includes a remastered version of the original album along with six unreleased outtakes on two CDs. The DVD features a newly restored version of the concert, as well as more than an hour of previously unseen footage from the rehearsal. UNPLUGGED: EXPANDED AND REMASTERED will be available in mid-October 2013 (see below for worldwide release dates). A 2-CD only version without the DVD will also be available on the same dates.

For the original album’s 14 performances, Clapton reinterpreted songs from his rich catalog, including Layla — completely reimagined as a shuffle — from his time with Derek and the Dominos, Running On Faith and Old Love from 1989’s Journeyman, and the hit single Tears In Heaven, a song he wrote after the passing of his young son Conor the previous year. Much of the album showcases blues songs Clapton grew up listening to, like Bo Diddley’s Before You Accuse Me, Big Bill Broonzy’s Hey Hey, Leadbelly’s Alberta and Robert Johnson’s Malted Milk.

The second disc of UNPLUGGED: EXPANDED AND REMASTERED includes several songs not on the original album, such as a cover of Big Maceo Merriweather’s Worried Life Blues, an alternate take of Walkin’ Blues and early versions of Circus and My Father’s Eyes — songs that would surface six years later on Clapton’s album Pilgrim.

The DVD included in this collection contains a newly restored version of the original broadcast, which aired August 25, 1992 on MTV. For the first time ever, fans will also have the opportunity to see more than an hour of unreleased footage recorded during the pre-show rehearsal. Filmed from multiple camera angles, it features an intimate look at Clapton and the band working on arrangements and running through 14 songs, including Circus and My Father’s Eyes, which were not featured in the final broadcast.

i hate when they do this shit.

i could care less about the DVD and i will not buy it for 5 (actually 4 since 'my fathers eyes' is doubled) new songs.

and then the record companies and artists wonder aloud why people download.

I always disliked this album-thought it sounded like "Barnes & Nobles" music (that version of "Layla" is abysmal IMO), but it sold around 10 million so what do I know.

But that 2nd CD is insulting. 6 tracks, 4 of which are just alternate takes?

I could see someone wanting the DVD I guess.

There appears to be a CD only version as well. So no need to get concerned (as I would be) that you have to buy the DVD as well:

i remember back when all this started, it was either sheryl crow (sweet child of mine) or lenny kravitz (american woman) that added these songs to already existing albums and reissued them. CD singles were basically done by then.

then a few other bands jumped on the band wagon (counting crows is one for sure)

i thought it had pretty stopped, but clapton threw in the DVD to make it a better deal, will be interesting to see what they charge for this.

it makes it even more intriguing to see what the price will be with no DVD.

First, this is a great album, so it's not surprising that something like this would come out and perhaps there's only a few songs on the 2 discs is because there isn't much worth including and they didn't want to add additional tracks on a live album and many people might want the DVD, especially if it's 5.1. I don't see what the big deal is.

List price is $25.

I was always very disappointed that "Circus" didn't make the original release - even more so when "Pilgrimage" came out and had a much inferior version on it.

I don't think I ever got the DVD for this, so I don't mind an upgrade. But I also don't feel a compelling need to hear this version of "Layla" too often - I like it, but it got way overplayed. It's a decent change-up to the original, but that's all. It's not a substitute, and too many times it was played instead of the original.

so, for $25 you get 4 new songs (ok 5, even though the same song is on there twice) and a DVD.

someone asked what the big deal is, the big deal is that if you bought it the first time this should have all been on there, then they could have sold the DVD separately for those who wished.

now, if you could trade in you old CD for full credit towards the new one...........yeah right!

and the first on can be had used for $1 or less everywhere!. there are 3 1/2 pages of used ones for 1¢ on amazon.

ya know, thinking about it, this might be a worse fleecing than the mccartney "memory almost full" scam of a few years ago. and i didn't think anyone could stoop lower than that in fan fleecing.

I agree about the quality of the album, and especially the "Layla" track. Until his recent release, this was my least favorite Clapton offering.

I'm surprised that there weren't some vintage b-sides for this--I would have guessed that either the "Layla" remake or "Tears In Heaven" were released as singles. I know that the Rod Stewart and the Springsteen "Unplugged" titles both had b-sides. Dylan's "Unplugged" had an import-only track. I never saw the VHS version of the video, but I do remember MTV broadcasting this as an hour-long show, then following it up with an additional half-hour worth of stuff.

But if I never hear this album again, it's OK by me. Taking a classic rocker like "Layla" and turning it into acoustic mush was an interesting experiment for about thirty or forty seconds...

Apples and oranges -- you're talking about a remastered and expanded edition of a 20 year-old title which includes notable rarities (the early versions of "Circus" and "My Father's Eyes") and a remastered DVD that essentially doubles the content of the original versus a "quickie" reissue that appeared six months after the initial album release.

3 discs for $20 retail doesn't strike me as fleecing, despite the glut of cheap copies of the single Unplugged CD on the used market.

Simply because "people" can, and they would do so even if this was released at half the price. Perhaps you'd be happier if "the record companies and artists" simply didn't bother making this type of material available.

no i would be happier if i could trade in the original CD i bought at full price towards the new one.

if not allow me to buy just the material i didn't already purchase.

I think I'd rather have been able to trade in "Pilgrim" towards this!

It all depends on your starting point for stuff like this, I think. For me, I don't think I have the DVD, so $25 (likely $18-20 or less street) isn't horrible to upgrade to the DVD version plus the CD with the bonus tracks. It'll probably work out the same as if I'd bought the DVD when it was released.

But if I'd bought the DVD, then I'd be much more aligned with Renny's POV - $25 for four songs that should have been on the original CD release.

And every time the labels put out an edited show (SRV at Austin City Limits, for example), they're creating an opportunity for the "Super Deluxe Extra Special Expanded Remastered Director's Cut Complete For The Very First Time Rama-Lama-Ding-Dong" version to come out later for 3X the price.

With a limited edition index card.

No way that it's worse. Again, I don't see much a big deal. But memory almost full - yeah that was crap. I paid more and got that ridiculous package instead of a standard cd to fit with other McCartney ones (or any cds) and then a standard size comes out for less, with the content.

The only plus to it not fitting with the other cds is that ultimately I don't care for the album.

This is what I keep coming back to. If anything, the original "Clapton Unplugged" release was the ripoff. I can still picture it, in a cardboard longbox, right next to that Natalie Cole "Sings With Her Dead Dad" album (another inexplicable easy-listening album of remakes that baby boomers bought by the metric ton), on sale at K Mart for $14.99 or so, back in an era when fifteen bucks could buy a tank of gas, or three or four meals at McDonalds. A double album would have pushed the price closer to $25. A full-length VHS video was might be generally $15-20.

So it's not the repackaging and deluxe editions that I mind so much, it's going to Walmart and seeing all of the brand-new $5 discs in the bargain bin, and realizing how much money I would have saved had I simply waited ten or twenty years to buy this music--and if that Natalie Cole thing isn't at Walmart for $5, I can probably go to a pawnshop and find it for $4

It'd be even better if they'd done this set as a SD Blu ray with the audio in full bitrate lossless quality.

At $15.88 it's hard to muster any real indignation over this. Pretty reasonable price, certainly far from a rip-off.
