King Crimson - The Road to Red - Limited edition, multi CD, DVD-A/Blu-Ray boxed set.

DGM has assembled a set focusing on the final North American tour of 1974. Though edited portions of this tour was documented on 1992's The Great Deceiver, the bulk of The Road To Red is previously unreleased on CD and will include new hi-res transfers from original analogue tape mixes of complete, unedited concerts. Also included in the set is a new stereo mix of Red by Robert Fripp & Steven Wilson.

My one question, is I own the Red DVD-A/CD set & I could go upstairs & read the booklet; but I sure thought the 2.0 on that was a Wilson/Fripp remix also. Perhaps it was just a remaster?

All these amazing box sets will send me broke. The sneaky way they always say its a limited edition gives me the s#!ts.

I am certain the original 2.0 mix is included on that recent CD/DVD set in 96/24 KHz

VIA Burning Shed:

King Crimson - The Road To Red

For many King Crimson fans nothing compares with the band's output from 1972-1974.

Over 21 cds, 1 dvd, 2 blu-ray discs, copious sleeve notes and replica memorabilia, The Road To Red comprehensively captures the essence of King Crimson's US tour of 1974 and the process leading to one of the band's most important albums.

A total of 16 concerts are featured across 20 discs, with a new Steven Wilson and Robert Fripp stereo mix of the studio Red as the 21st CD.

Commenting on the final live date on The Road To Red, Robert Fripp notes that this was the first gig, "Since the 1969 Crimson where the bottom of my spine registered 'out of this world' to the same degree."

---------

* 20 CDs of live material drawn from:

10 concerts recorded on stereo soundboard cassettes directly from the band's mixing desk - all previously unreleased on CD, audio newly restored at DGM Soundworld in 2013.

5 concerts professionally recorded on multi-track tape. Parts of these shows have been previously included in the USA & The Great Deceiver releases, but they are all included here in full on CD for the first time.

1 CD drawn from an audio restored high quality bootleg of the band's final 1974 New York concert previously available only via mail order and now remastered.

* CD 21 features a new stereo mix of Red by Steven Wilson & Robert Fripp

* DVD (compatible with all DVD players & DVD Rom players) High Resolution Stereo mixes of the Asbury Park/USA concert in its various released/unreleased configurations (24bit/48khz).

* Blu-Ray Disc 1 features full lossless audio 24/192 transfers of four complete professionally recorded concerts newly transferred at the highest possible resolution from the original analogue Dolby SR half inch mix-downs in DTS-HD master sound stereo.

* Blu-Ray Disc 2 features a 24/192 transfer of the Asbury Park/USA concert, a new stereo mix of Red in 24/96 DTS-HD master sound stereo by Robert Fripp & Steven Wilson, and also contains the original stereo mix of Red along with the 5.1 mix of the album in 24/96 DTS-HD + bonus audio material.

* Discs packaged in 8 individual 3 disc digi-packs within an album sized box.

* LP sized booklet with rare/unseen photos, new sleeve notes by Robert Fripp, Sid Smith, technical notes on the recordings by David Singleton, expanded band member diary entries and eye-witness accounts from fans who attended the gigs

* Memorabilia including postcards, album prints, replica set lists & more besides.

---------

Between April and July 1974 King Crimson embarked on a tour of Canada and America which has come to be recognised as one of the most powerful series of concerts performed not just by Fripp, Cross, Wetton and Bruford but by any band of the era.

The band, who had been rarely off the road - except to record studio albums - chose to perform a selection of recent material from the then newly released Starless And Bible Black, older fan favourites, newly written/then unrecorded material & nightly improvisations at a level described by many eye-witnesses and observers as the most intense gigs they'd ever attended.

A single live LP USA was issued in 1975, a year after the band split but failed to convey the full extent of how ferocious a beast King Crimson was in full-flight. No other band blended powerful rock with an ability to turn in epic improvisations of immense subtlety or strength.

Many of the shows on this final tour had been recorded, either professionally to multi-track tape, or on the band's stereo cassette feed from the mixing desk. These remained unheard until 1992 when selected highlights were released in 1992 on the 4 CD boxed set, The Great Deceiver.

Now The Road To Red offers a comprehensive overview of this final tour and at last does justice to a group who were operating at the very height of their powers.

Every soundboard quality recording known to exist is presented with audio fully restored, all released on CD for the first time. There are also five complete concerts, drawn from multi-track recordings, alongside the restored audio bootleg of the band's final show from New York and a new stereo mix of Red by Robert Fripp and Steven Wilson undertaken in 2012.

A total of 16 concerts are featured across 20 discs, with the studio Red as the 21st CD.

The set also features:

A DVD containing a high resolution stereo presentation of USA (in all mixes) and the new stereo mix of Red.

2 Blu-Ray discs containing the five full length multi-track concert recordings (newly transferred at the highest resolution available from the original analogue Dolby SR source mix-down tapes & presented in 24/192 DTS-HD master sound), new & original stereo versions of Red and the existing 5.1 multi-channel mixes of the album presented in 24/96 DTS-HD also feature on Blu-Ray.

With a fully illustrated album-sized booklet featuring previously unseen photos & a wealth of newly written material + postcards, replicas of hand-written set lists, album prints of the USA & Red covers & other memorabilia, this is an essential release for King Crimson fans.

The Burning Shed/Panegyric version comes with an exclusive t-shirt.

King Crimson - USA - 40th Anniversary Edition (cd/dvd preorder)

The ninth release in the King Crimson 40th Anniversary series.

USA was originally issued in 1975 and marked the final statement by the band's incendiary mid-1970s incarnation.

The CD features a completely new stereo album mix of the full concert by Robert Fripp & David Singleton, while the DVD features High Resolution Stereo mixes (24bit/96khz) of all three editions of this album/concert.

Presented as double digi-pack format in a slipcase with Sid Smith sleeve notes, rare photos and archive material.

---------

USA was recorded towards the end of King Crimson's final US tour of the 70s in June 1974. It was issued as an epitaph for the band in Spring 1975 as a single album - at a time when doubles or even triple live albums were more considered the norm for live releases. Deleted towards the end of the vinyl era in the mid-80s, it remained unreleased in the CD era until the expanded edition was finally issued in October 2002. In common with much of Crimson's output, it was not well received at the time by critics, though its critical reputation grew immeasurably in the intervening years to the point where a review of the 21st Century Guide to King Crimson boxed set in 2004 identified the album as the point, "...where Fripp maps out the guitar blueprint for the entire post-punk movement."

If that claim sounds somewhat exaggerated, a casual listen to the opening minutes of the album where the ethereal 'walk on...' tape of Fripp & Eno's No Pussyfooting gives way to the sonic assault of Larks' II - provides ample evidence to back up the claim. It's also worth noting the audience response to the band - especially at the end of Starless, a piece that had yet to be recorded in the studio at that point.

The reputation of the 1972/1974 King Crimson line-ups is now revered by critics and fans alike, with the material so sought after that it can justify a full 21 CD/DVD/2 Blu-Ray collection of the US/Canadian tours of Spring/Summer 1974.

Drawn from that release & presented in the King Crimson 40th Anniversary series format, the USA CD/DVD features a previously unreleased mix of the Asbury Park concert that formed the bulk of the original album, while the DVD features Hi-Res stereo versions of that mix, Ronan Chris Murphy's mix of the concert (issued on CD in 2006) & the expanded version of the original vinyl album as issued in 2002.

Uniquely, of the releases in this series, USA is presented in Hi-Resolution stereo only - not 5.1 Surround - as Robert Fripp decided that the live power of the quartet is best experienced in stereo sound.

Pre-order for 14th October release.
preorder (£12.99 GBP)

Tracks
1. Walk on.. No Pussyfooting
2. Larks' Tongues In Aspic: Part II
3. Lament
4. Exiles
5. Asbury Park
6. Easy Money
7. Fracture
8. Starless
9. 21st Century Schizoid Man

DVD:

Hi-Res stereo versions of the three different album mixes:
expanded 30th anniversary edition, Ronan Chris Murphy mix & previously unreleased Robert Fripp/David Singleton mix.

I want the big box. But to spend $300 I'd have to win the lottery.

Why didn't Pink Floyd do boxes like this? Led Zeppelin has enough SBDs and outtakes to make magnificent box sets such as this.
Its strange the big artists such as those have not followed King Crimson's lead.

Totally different business model. KC (i.e. Fripp) has their/his own label. Floyd & LZ are on the majors. Though Dylan is turning into somewhat of an exception on that (all the Sony "official bootleg" boxes).

Even the Stones are releasing the downloads on there own label. Another example would be Marillion. No 20 disc boxes, but their must be over 50 releases on their label.

One reason I followed the King Crimson Collector's Club series rather than say the Grateful Dead's Dick Picks is that the various incarnations of the band were different enough that it did worthwhile to follow through the entire series. With all apologies to the Dead Heads out there, after picking up a dozen or so of the Dick's Picks, the set lists and performances all started to merge into a big sonic blob for me (I'll still pick up the new set though...love the look of the film). So, given that, what is being done with The Road to Red box set is really interesting. i thought the Lark's Tongue in Aspic box represented the ultimate box set. What it looks like to me is that DGM is attempting to bracket the 72-74 KC by creating a mirror image of that set. But instead of following from the start, they are providing the end of that iteration of the band, with what appears to be every recorded note available from the last tour leading into the Red album itself. A fascinating approach. i wonder if they will follow a similar tack with the Discipline era band?

I hope the sound quality on the Red concerts is better than Larks, many of which sounded like audie boots. I think they did mention that all of these but 1 were soundbaoards, though.

The monster box of Red is cool for those with disposable income (I'm just disposable).

The USA remaster I will get for sure.

What the hell is the deal with the Red 2 CD remaster? I JUST got this how long ago?

Another mix from 2013???? And what looks to be the same bonus cuts (unless I'm missing something).

And yet, so many other albums haven't been handled yet and here we get our SECOND 40th anniversary edition. Whatever.

Starting to save my shekels now! I'm all over this, the upcoming Chick Webb/Ella Mosaic set, and the giant Horowitz at Carnegie Hall box. T'will be a generous Santa who drops by my house this year ... I hope ...
