Excerpts from “The World at My Feet” available from Sandie’s Boutique
Part Two: Losing My Step
Chapter: Barefoot Contest

My first recording session

“I borrowed money from my dad to come up to London for the recording session. Both Adam (Faith) and Eve (my manager) were in attendance. I had to wear these huge earphones on my head that mucked up my hairdo. I felt really silly. When I looked up I could see them all upstairs in the control room through the glass panel discussing my performance. Eve did not look at all happy. Suddenly her face changed; became animated. She made a remark to everyone, pointing at me as she jumped up and down with excitement.
I heard them all laughing and squealing down the talkback,’Your feet! Your feet!’ I looked down at my oversized pair of plates.
‘What’s the matter with them?’ I asked defensively.
‘You’ve got no shoes on!’
I apologised and began hunting round the studio for my slingbacks.
‘No. No. Keep them off. You may not look better, but you sing better that way!’ laughed Eve.
‘Suits me,’ I said, and kicked them off again. Three takes and the song was in the can. From then on, whenever I sang I was barefoot. Et voila! La chanteuse aux pieds nus; la cantante scalza; the barefoot contessa!

‘For hard-corn Sandie Shaw fanatics, here are the reasons why:
It is more comfortable – I could never find shoes to fit my size seven-and-a-half’s in Dagenham.
It is one less thing to think about when getting an outfit together.
I am extremely short-sighted and it helps me make my way around the stage without falling off the edge.
Its symbolic potency is immense.
It feels sexy.’

--Hello Angel

The Sandie Shaw Supplement

Image

Product Description
The Sandie Shaw Supplement was a TV show hosted by Sandie in the Summer of 68, a musical magazine that was rather ahead of its time. The accompanying album, released in October, and featuring a larger backing band than had previously been at Sandie's disposal, is arguably her best long player of the sixties and a perfect demonstration of her versatility. The TV series covered a broad range of material (Sandie insisted on selecting contemporary songwriters like Jagger-Richards, Paul Simon, The Bee Gees, Harry Nilsson and Carol Bayer Sager) and the album, directed and realised by Sandie, arranger Ken Woodman and engineer Bill Street featured six songs from the show and six new songs. Our version adds 11 bonus cuts, including the smash hit, Monsieur Dupont. It's also worth noting that there are a total of nine nuggets from her one-man hit-machine, singer-songwriter Chris Andrews (seven of them bonus tracks). Among them are some particularly fine examples of the close musical relationship the pair enjoyed, notably Send Me A Letter, originally written for Adam Faith, Any Time, Any Place, Anywhere and the quirky Voice In The Crowd.

1. (Get Your Kicks On) Route 66
2. Homeward Bound
3. Scarborough Fair
4. Right to Cry
5. The Same Things
6. Our Song Of Love
7. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
8. Words
9. Remember Me
10. Change Of Heart
11. Aranjuez Mon Amour
12. What Now My Love
13. Show Me (mono)
14. One More Life (mono)
15. Together
16. Turn On The Sunshine (mono)
17. Make It Go
18. Those Were The Days (Double A-side)
19. Monsieur Dupont (mono)
20. Voice In The Crowd
21. Think It All Over
22. Send Me A Letter
23. Any Time, Any Place, Anywhere (mono)

Reviewing The Situation

Image

Product Description
In 1969 Sandie conceived this album of striking cover versions by some of the most influential writers and musicians of the decade. From Lionel Bart to Led Zeppelin (Sandie is famously the first person to cover Led Zep) - via The Beatles, The Stones, Bob Dylan, Dr. John and others - the artists selected had a song thoughtfully reinterpreted by Sandie and her crack backing band, Pork Chop. The album was recorded in conditions of near secrecy and Sandie's manager, Eve Taylor, was largely kept in ignorance of the endeavour. When it finally appeared in December 1969, Taylor was shocked at the direction that her treasured cash cow had taken. As if to underline the fact that there was no escape from the light-entertainment treadmill, or from the fact that Eve had no understanding of where her artist now wished to be positioned, Sandie was booked to perform the title track on an episode of This is Tom Jones on Dec. 11, 1969. Although it might not have been what Eve - or Sandie's fans for that matter - were anticipating, Reviewing The Situation has deservedly achieved cult status over the ensuing decades and it is certainly a much more innovative and durable record than anyone had any right to expect. The ten bonus tracks comprise singles from the era and other numbers (some of which were recorded for the album but failed to make the cut) that remained in the vaults until recently.

1. Reviewing the Situation
2. Lay Lady Lay
3. Mama Roux
4. With The Sun In My Eyes
5. Walking the Dog
6. Love Me Do
7. Oh Gosh
8. Your Time Is Gonna Come
9. Coconut Grove
10. Sympathy for the Devil
11. Frank Mills
12. Junk
13. Heaven Knows I'm Missing Him Now
14. So Many Things To Do
15. By Tomorrow
16. Maple Village
17. Wight Is Wight
18. That's The Way He's Made
19. The Fool On The Hill
20. Love Is For The Two Of Us

Hello Angel

Image

Product Description
After the success of her 1984 first Rough Trade single, Hand In Glove, on which she was backed by The Smiths, it would be a further four years until Sandie was in position to record an album for the label. Hello Angel, on which most of the tracks were co-written by Sandie herself (augmented by songs by The Waterboys, The Jesus And Mary Chain and others), was the result, her most personally satisfying album project to date and her best work in almost twenty years. The ten bonus cuts round up the single b-sides as well as the tracks Sandie recorded with The Smiths in 1984 and during her short time at Polydor in 1986. The first sign that Sandie had recorded a new album was the release in October 1988 of Please Help The Cause Against Loneliness. The 12-inch single featured two other notable tracks, Lover Of The Century and I Will Remain (also the last track on the album). Morrissey co-wrote the A-side with producer Stephen Street and Sandie was bang on song with her performance. Of course, as any self-respecting Sandie Shaw fan knew, the trick was also to flip the single and listen to the B-sides. And this single was to prove to be no exception. Lover Of The Century, a classy songwriting collaboration between Sandie and Mark E. Nevin, slotted into that laid-back loungecore mood that was popularised at the time by such acts as Everything but the Girl and Swing Out Sister. The quality of Sandie s lyrics powers through many of the tracks here, sufficiently so to make you wonder why Sandie had never been encouraged to write earlier. Her new-found talent for songwriting was certainly no fluke, as I Will Remain in particular demonstrates. There are those who rate this collaboration with old friend Chris Andrews as the performance of her career and it is a lovely way to draw this very accomplished album to a close.

1. Nothing Less Than Brilliant
2. Hello Angel
3. Take Him
4. A Girl Called Johnny
5. Strange Bedfellows
6. Please Help The Cause Against Loneliness
7. Hand In Glove
8. Cool About You
9. Flesh and Blood
10. Comrade In Arms
11. I Will Remain
12. Lover of the Century (b-side)
13. Where Were You (b-side)
14. I Love Peace (b-side)
15. Jeane (b-side)
16. Hand In Glove (original single version)
17. I Don't Owe You Anything (b-side)
18. Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken (single)
19. Steven (You Don't Eat Meat) (b-side)
20. Frederick (single)
21. Go Johnny Go (b-side)

Never heard of this artist until I read this thread.

4 page interview of Sandie in the May issue of Record Collector...

8 pager in the latest issue #33 of Shindig!

The word is that Choose Life (1983) will NOT be reissued as part of this series, but new copies of the most recent reissue from 1995 are still out there (and it's fab too)...

This was my favourite of the 1960s UK girl singers' comeback albums in the 1980s. Even moreso now with the singles tacked on. It's just outstanding quality from start to finish:

It is an excellent album. Within that group, I'd place it behind only Dusty's "Reputation." (I know, I know... that came out in 1990, but I consider it more of an '80s album. That also allows me to put Lulu's "Independence" on top among the 1960s UK girl singers in the 1980s. )

"Hand In Glove" really is sensational, isn't it? Love that clip, too, especially when she sings while striking that pose on the floor. So cool.

Lulu was all set to do an album with The Style Council in 1984, but Paul Weller found out about her politics and reneged on the deal. That might have rivalled Sandie's comeback.

I agree about Sandie's album. I didn't know about Lulu's-that would have been interesting.
I keep hoping she'll do another new one someday.

I'm keeping my shoes on and putting the comp in my Amazon cart. I have an older comp, but if this one sounds good, I'll be back for more of these.
