How does the latest incarnation compare to the Sykes version? I thought Sykes did a great job carrying on the torch. I really can't imagine them without him at this point.

To be honest, as a Lizzy fanatic I could not get behind the Sykes-led lineup. He turned them into a Metal act and I disliked his voice. He's still a killer guitarist of course. It felt nothing like Lizzy in the least to me and I saw them twice (in 2001 and 2004). This lineup is doing so well and playing bigger venues because you have 3 classic members (Gorham, Downey, Wharton) and Marco Mendoza who has been with them many years in the tribute years. The 2 new faces are Vivian Campbell who of course is amazing and legendary (and Irish!) and Ricky Warwick (ex-Almighty). Warwick does a very good job. Not close enough to what I'd ideally want, but he is good and far better IMO than Sykes as a vocalist for these songs. The 2011 tour was hugely successful overseas, moreso than anything the tribute-era has had to date. So, this lineup is much, much closer to the classic Lizzy sound which is why the response has been so positive. Of course, without Phil it just ain't ever gonna be the same, but this lineup does work. I'll be seeing them Mar. 29 in Philly and I'll hope to have a good time! The clips I've heard from these CDs are rather good and as you'd expect from Concert Live, soundboard recordings.

1. in my one purchase from them, shipping was staggeringly slow
2. Same purchase they used Pro Disc blanks which are crap
3. I'm also finding if you're willing to wait a while to purchase, they have some pretty large markdowns.

I've never gotten one from them and for the Lizzy I'd wait until markdowns as you've said. If they have one at the show I'm at I might get one and post a review, but if it's more than $15 I'll pass.

I'm looking forward to hearing samples. Never been a fan of Campbell (like him as a person, but his guitar work has always bored me). Pretty ironic he followed Sykes in Lep and now in Lizzy. Will they be replacing him when he rejoins Lep this summer?

No, I meant Def Leppard. Didn't even think about the obvious one of Whitesnake! Wow, Campbell really has followed Sykes from job to job!
Sykes was brought in during Adrenalize and was Def's first choice to replace Steve Clarke. Joe Elliott thought he was too much of a wild card (concerns were that he wouldn't stick around very long and there were also concerns about his personal "vices") and gave him the boot. They ended up going with Campbell for his stability. His work on Adrenalize is uncredited.

I'll have to find it. That was 20 years ago. I worked for PolyGram at the time and it was pretty common knowledge. I believe a reference to it may be in Animal Instinct (the Def Lep book). I'll have to check...

I put this in the Thin Lizzy thread in the Icebox, but I'll say it again-Robbo agrees with me about Sykes!
The Thin Lizzy lineup led by John Sykes was a waste of time, says classic era guitarist Brian ‘Robbo’ Robertson.
He hasn’t seen the 2011 edition of Phil Lynott’s legacy outfit, but he hopes they manage to record new material – and he says he’s glad the Sykes band didn’t.
Robbo helped forge the band’s twin-lead guitar sound before a stint with Motorhead and later Frankie Miller. After nearly two decades he’s back with his first solo album, Diamonds and Dirt.
And while he doesn’t know much about the current Lizzy – featuring original members Scott Gorham, Brian Downey and Darren Wharton alongside Def Leppard’s Vivian Campbell, ex-Almighty frontman Ricky Warwick and former Whitesnake bassist Marco Mendoze – he believes it’s a step up from Skyes’ era.
Robbo tells SleazeRoxx: “I’m not knocking John here – he’s a good friend. But the thing with him was a complete waste of time. John was fine with Thin Lizzy when Phil was still there, but when he started to do it himself it went a bit haywire.
“The whole band became a heavy metal caricature of Thin Lizzy, and the diehards didn’t like it because it got so metal. John is out for John and that version of the band had more to do with him than the memory of Thin Lizzy.
“As for the new lineup, I haven’t seen them. I’ve been speaking to people and by all accounts it’s much better than what they were doing with John.
“I’d love to see them go into the studio and do something new. The way I see it, ten or fifteen years of playing the old stuff is ten or fifteen years wasted.
“Then again, if they’d gone into the studio with Sykes, would it have been worthwhile for the Lizzy name? I think definitely not. It would have turned out with heavy metal riffs and no melody.”
Diamonds and Dirt includes two reworkings of the Lizzy track Running Back, which Robbo refused to record during the band’s Jailbreak sessions.
The guitarist says: “Phil and I had a big bust-up over that. I always loved the song. We were sitting in the studio and I went over to the piano and started playing a boogie version of it.
“Lynott said, ‘That’s enough, we’re not doing that.’ I got pissed off – I told him to fuck off, he told me to fuck off, then I went to the pub. I didn’t play on the version of Running Back on that album. It’s all Scott because I refused to do it. Phil wanted to do it pop and I wanted to do it blues.”
Among Robbo’s regrets is not having caught up with Gary Moore before his sudden death in February – and he believes his old friend died of a broken heart. “It was a bad shock,” says the Scotsman. “He was a good mate. I could have called him up but he had my number too. He was always a bit of a loner. I think he was heartbroken, to be honest. I’m not going to go into why that was, but I think he was heartbroken.”

Been listening a bit to the 2012 Concerts Live Shepperd's Bush. Musically it's better than I expected. The vocalist is pretty dead on as a PL clone. Soundwise, it's both a muddy mix & it's loud, so there's very little detail; I'd describe it as muddy (at least in my car where I've mostly played it).
