Director Brad Bird on 'The Incredibles' sequel: 'I have been thinking about it'

Brad Bird has discussed the possibility of making a sequel to his 2004 smash The Incredibles.

Written and directed by Bird, The Incredibles was a computer-animated comedy about a family of superheroes posing as ordinary suburbanites. The film, whose voice cast included Samuel L Jackson and Holly Hunter, won the Best Animated Feature prize at the 2005 Oscars.

In the past, Bird has said he is "open" to the idea of The Incredibles 2, and now he has given an update. "I have been thinking about it," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "People think that I have not been, but I have. Because I love those characters and love that world. I am stroking my chin and scratching my head."

Continuing, Bird revealed that he already has several ideas for the sequel, saying: "I have many, many elements that I think would work really well in another [Incredibles] film, and if I can get 'em to click all together, I would probably wanna do that."

Bird followed The Incredibles by making another computer-animated blockbuster, 2007's Ratatouille, and then directing Tom Cruise in 2011's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. He is currently working on Tomorrowland, a live action sci-fi film starring George Clooney and Hugh Laurie set for release in December 2014.

I am very glad Brad Bird is not rushing it. He is letting the ideas develop naturally. I respect the hell out of that. I want to see a sequel worthy of its predecessor and that is worth the wait.

I wonder if the Underminer would be the villain but I'm guessing probably not.

I respect the hell out of that guy and he can take as long as he wants, as long as he delivers the goods. I really can't imagine a sequel living up to the original in most case but with Brad Bird, anything's possible.

If the story's good I'm down for whatever Brad Bird has to offer, but I doubt the Underminer will be the main villain. He was kind of just a throwaway joke character.

Maybe, but also clearly based on Mole Man.

Obviously. "Joke" was probably a bad choice of word, but he was a throw away character. Mind you I think it would be very interesting if the sequel picked up exactly where the last one left off, but I don't see it happening. Regardless, whatever Brad Bird decides to do he has my total faith and confidence. I'm reasonably confident it will be great.

Yeah, I doubt he would be the villain too, though it would be cool to see him in a flashback or something.

Or like a cameo. Like open the movie with them pummeling him for the umpteenth time to establish them as a real and proper super team who really have their stuff together at this point to pave the way for a real and formidable threat.

I guess Ghost Protocol was such a flop he had to run back to the Incredibles.

This is Clerks II all over again.

I wonder if he can finally stop it with that obvious lie now that Disney owns Marvel.

No need for that. There's plenty of room on the bus. Except for Doot. No room for Doot.

If it's not a lie, it's an extraordinary coincidence. Or else someone else helped develop the characters.

Agreed.

No Doot.
