The Second Disc posted about this a few weeks back; I figured I'd post it here while the pre-order offer was still on the table. It presents something of a streamlined version of the OOP 9-disc "And It's Deep, Too" boxed set as well as 2005's "Evolution/Revolution," and Shout! Factory claims the set includes a bunch of previously unreleased stuff as well. As for the two DVD's--they are set to contain Pryor's three stand-up films.

The official blurb:
Quote:
With seven CDs and two DVDs that deliver over 12 hours of prime Richard Pryor hilarity – both familiar and rare – spanning from 1966 to 1992, this essential collection features the best recordings from his early years as a still-developing stand-up, his ’70s-early ’80s glory years as a profane-but-profound comic icon, and one of his final onstage performances in 1992. The deluxe book contains rare photos, multiple essays, exclusive celebrity tributes, a discography, a filmography, and a personal note penned by Richard's widow, Jennifer Lee Pryor. This is the most comprehensive collection ever devoted to the greatest comedian who ever lived.

Here's the kicker--anybody who pre-orders this through the Shout! Factory website at http://www.shoutfactory.com/?q=node/217256 will get a 10th disc containing a previously unreleased 1973 performance, and will also receive the set four weeks ahead of time--shipping on May 14th instead of June 11th.

For those hose willing to wait an extra month, forgo the bonus disc, and save some $$$: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C6P7I8Y/?tag=imwan-20

The Shout! Factory page also has the tracklisting for the seven CD's; I'm not going to paste it here because, well--go read it and you'll understand why.

I have a 1,500 mile drive later this month--the timing on this is perfect!

The bonus disc is also part of the current PopMarket offer at only $54.99 including free shipping.

I'd be all over this but I'm still paying off a slate of birthdays...

It's a great set--while much of it is familiar material from his 1970's albums, the goal is to stitch together a seven-disc narrative. The early years are already familiar terrain, due primarily to the "Evolution/Revolution" compilation, but the outtakes from the mid-70's through 1983 really round out the set quite effectively, providing interesting alternative versions of this "New Year's Eve" and "Africa" routines, while also including some very revealing exchanges that Pryor had with audiences in the early 1980's. In one, Pryor discusses his need to take some time off after he films the performance that would be the "Live On The Sunset Strip" movie. The audience is disappointed to hear this (and responds as such), but Pryor simply and honestly relates how his life has changed, due both to his success and to his stint in the burn ward. In another recording, from the first or two shows that would be the basis for "Sunset Strip", Pryor gets onstage and is too nervous to "be funny"--he apologizes to the audience and cuts the show short after less than ten minutes. As a result of moments like these, the overall effect of the set is to create a truly engrossing portrait of Pryor through his own words. Very well done.

Amazon Canada has this for IIRC, 14.10 CDN. I paid US $25 & change for it about an hour ago. No bonus CD, though.
