Nilsson wrote the song as "Girlfriend," which was first released on the Personal Best anthology (and is on this comp). It was adapted, with altered lyrics, for the TV theme.
I've never been totally sure that the TV theme was actually sung by Nilsson, but I know it's on one volume of the Television's Greatest Hits collections from TVT Records. There's also a version on a promo-only Nilsson CD sampler.

Then there's "Best Friend" by Puppet, available on Guilty Pleasures: Music You Hate To Love, a compilation on Risky Business:

Living on the edge.
The TVT release that Jimbo talked about is Volume 2 and Amazwan credits Nilsson as the performer. You can take that for what it's worth. The track is only 59 seconds long though.

Which disc may also be notable to some of us for having, among other things:
Gilbert Green - Gerry Marsden Almost Summer - Celebration (featuring Mike Love)

More about that Guilty Pleasures CD:
"Quick Joey Small" by the Kasenetz-Katz Singing Orchestral Circus was a Top 20 UK hit. It was retitled "Run Joey Run" and became a smash for David Geddes in the US.
The version of "Washington Square" by the Village Stompers on this CD was apparently dubbed from a vinyl LP, played at 45 RPM. It's kind of funny hearing it at the wrong speed.

My copy came on Saturday with the Essential Mott the Hoople. It was an essential weekend.
What about Harry's version of the Beatles' She's Leaving Home that led John Lennon to name Nilsson as his favorite group? It's not on this collection and I don't think I've ever heard it. I've read about it forever, though.
