5 CD Box Set

Remastered from original stereo tapes at Abbey Road Studios

Includes the rare CD ‘Til The Band Comes In.

Hardback, lift-off lid, box-set

Recreating the original album artwork

New, extensive sleeve notes on each album plus rare photos.

The 16 page booklet is written by Rob Young who edited last year’s compendium No Regrets: Writings on Scott Walker.

In 1967 a 24 year old Scott Walker stepped out from his role as lead vocalist with The Walker Brothers to produce his debut solo album simply titled Scott to much critical acclaim and chart success. This was to be the start of a vision of an artist set apart from his pop-balladeer teen idol image who went on to become a most enigmatic and revered male vocalist, singer-songwriter, composer, producer and a true creative force.
Scott – The Collection 1967-1970 collects together 5 of Scott’s solo albums released between 1967 – 1970. They showcase Scott’s inimitable vocals to an array of orchestral arrangements and powerful lyrical imagery, explored both through Scott’s self-written material alongside his much documented interpretations of the work of Jacques Brel, passionately delivered and beautifully arranged.
This CD collection is also mastered from the original stereo tapes

Scott Walker's discography is one of the holes in my collection that I've been planning on filling one of these days. Just read an excellent article on him in Prog magazine where they make the case for him being "prog" in the sense that he never followed rules in his solo career. Not sure where to start my collection, but perhaps this box set would fit the bill if the price is right.

Spin CDs has it listed at £22.99 (preorder). It's not listed at Amazon yet.

If Amazon has it for the same price, that would come to about $30-$33 after deducting VAT & adding the conversion rate + packing & shipping costs. Can anyone confirm if all of these albums are essential or if I'm better off with a compilation of this era? I know a lot of his most revered albums came out after this.

At the price I think you'd be better off with this set than a compilation, Rich.

Thanks Linda. So these albums are essential? Are they a good entry point, or should I get one of his later albums first? Years ago I got a Walker Brothers compilation but it just wasn't my thing at the time. I bought it based on loving Jules Shear's version of "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore."

Spin has it up. I'm waiting for Amazon to list it before I pounce (obviously).

JMLO, the later albums are the essential ones. At this price (and I'm assuming Amazon will be the same or better), though, I'd suggest it over a comp. You just get so much more for the money. This is what I'm doing, and I'm not a serious Scott Walker collector.

YMMV. :)

Thanks Linda. Now I just need to know what JMLO and YMMV refer to.

Just my little opinion ... your mileage might vary. :)

This is also available as a vinyl LP box set.

The so-called "critical" consensus is that his "Scott" albums 1 thru 4 (in this box) are the peak of his pop/interpretive solo career. After that, there was a significant drop off, by his own admission. But then he re-emerged as an avant-garde artiste starting with the 3rd album of the Walker Brothers reunion, and now he's kinda in a category all his own. And the critics are raving once again but for a different reason. AllMusic.com and Wiki are pretty good places to read up on his albums and career (imho).

The DVD "30 Century Man" is a fantastic biopic too, to see where he's been and where he's at, totally mind blowing...

I was going to suggest the same thing. I knew very little about Walker and his music, especially post-Walker Brothers, but I caught this on the Sundance Channel several months ago and found it fascinating.

I already have all 5 albums, the first four (Scott 1-4) already remastered. "Til The Band Comes In" is a big drop-off in quality, though there are a few good tracks. I'd stick with the first four, then maybe get the readily available 2-CD compilation "Classics and Collectables", which has a bunch of singles and soundtrack theme songs as well as key tracks from his albums.

Ha, it just occurred to me that this is not Scott's first 5 albums, but albums 1, 2, 3, 5, & 6. His 4th album was "Sings Songs From His TV Series", which I believe has not been released on CD, but a good chunk of those songs are on the "Classics & Collectibles" double CD. Operators are standing by...

Hoping the price comes down at least a little before it's released. I also want to find out about the packaging. Hopefully it's not a bare bones package with just outer sleeves and nothing else. For this money there should at least be a booklet.
