Before Parks & Rec, I was not an Amy Poehler fan. Found her totally annoying. Therefore did not start watching Parks & Rec when it debuted. My wife found it on Netflix two years after the fact and started marathoning. I almost immediately found that I loved Poehler as Leslie Knope — it's just exactly the right character for her. And, as everyone always notes, the show really becomes itself with season 2.

I agree--I never found Poehler all that funny on SNL, but in Leslie Knope, she's created a character unlike any other in TV history--a fairly diffuclt thing to do, 50+ years into the medium.
And I always want to defend the first season, if only to point out that it consists of only a half-dozen episodes. The show found its footing fairly quickly.
I just wish that the producers of the show would stop spoiling upcoming episodes for me by publicizing plot details and casting for upcoming episodes. Why are dramatic/suspense spoilers considered so sacrosanct, but when it's a sitcom, it's considered no big deal?
For those that watch Parks & Recreation, what do you think about Jean-Ralphio?
I love the show, Ron and Andy especially but I don't find anything with Jean-Ralphio funny. I usually end up forwarding through his scenes. However from what I've read I seem to be in the minority.
I like Jean-Ralphio in small doses, although I find the character more astonishing than funny. The producers have used the character wisely, avoiding Urkel Syndrome--once upon a time, Jean-Ralphio would have been spun off into a new sitcom by now.

I find Jean-Ralphio very funny, whereas I want to punch the equally ridiculous Tom Haverford almost every moment he's on-screen. I don't know why I find one amusing and the other irritating, but I want to believe it has to do with amount of screentime and not me being racist.
I like Tom a lot more than Jean-Ralphio and I don't think it's fair to call them equally ridiculous. Tom can be as ridiculous, but for him it is a mask put up to hide what I suspect are deep insecurities. Jean-Ralphio is just an idiot. An amusing idiot, but nonetheless an idiot. Tom has also had an actual character arc and has grown up a lot especially this season whereas Jean-Ralphio has remained stagnant and unwilling to learn from his mistakes.
