The long-awaited 40th anniversary edition of the legendary Larks’ Tongues In Aspic quintet will be released on October 15th.

One of the key recordings in the King Crimson canon, and the only formal studio recording by the LTIA quintet, the 40th Anniversary Edition will be released in three separate editions to satisfy the merely curious and the expectant collector.

1. CD/DVD-A: CD: New stereo mix + selected audio extras – all new content.
DVD-A featuring 5.1 new surround mix, original & new stereo mixes in hi-res stereo, a full album of alt mixes by Steven Wilson & more than 30 minutes of unseen footage of the band live in the studio.

2. Limited edition Boxed Set:13CDs, 1DVD-A, 1Blu-Ray in 12” box with booklet & memorabilia. DVD-A content as above, Blu-Ray content as per DVD-A with further hi-res stereo material – all presented in DTS Master audio, 4CDs of studio content including CD of session reels featuring the first recorded takes of all pieces on the album, 1CD live in the studio, 8CDs of live audio restored bootlegs & soundboard recordings + 36 page booklet with an extensive new interview with Robert Fripp, notes by King Crimson biographer Sid Smith, album sleeve print, concert ticket replica (with code for further concert download) & band photo postcards – limited to initial orders, one pressing only to a worldwide maximum limit of 7,000 units.

3. 2CD: Complete original & new mixes with selected audio extras.

Whilst the clip of the quintet performing LTIA pt1 during the Bremen Beat Club recording has been available on the internet for several years in varying degrees of quality, there has been some fevered speculation as to whether the full concert would ever see the light of day.

Though it's been a long time coming, the full video of David Cross, Robert Fripp, John Wetton, Bill Bruford and Jamie Muir will now be seen in full. We hope all Crimheads agree that the waiting to get this in the best possible quality will have been worth while.

Pre-ordering details will appear soon.

Zounds! :Joy:

That's gotta be a new record for most material included in a deluxe reissue of a single album. Does anything else come close?

CD-DVDA for me! Thank you Steven Wilson, the hardest working man in show business. Btw he has 2 releases coming up himself this Fall, a solo live album from his world tour (which I saw in Times Square) and another live album from Porcupine Tree from their previous tour which hit Radio City Music Hall at one point.

I'm thinking about the big box[the Blu ray's tempting since I don't have DVD-A capability].

I am going for the CD/DVD-A: CD: New stereo mix + selected audio extras – all new content.
DVD-A featuring 5.1 new surround mix, original & new stereo mixes in hi-res stereo, a full album of alt mixes by Steven Wilson & more than 30 minutes of unseen footage of the band live in the studio.

Then, when the time is right on a good deal I will spring for the "motherlode" box. I did that for the "In the Court..." and did well.

Based on the product description on the DGM mail order site, this may be the ultimate single album reissue...for any artist. Between the nine discs of live concerts, the four discs of studio related material and a downloadable concert (which DGM says in too poor shape to do any enhancement of...hence it being just a download) the ultimate package contains every single recorded note available from the five piece LTIA era band. The only two sets out there that I can think are comparable are the Stooges Rhino Handmade Funhouse set (which supposedly has every take of those sessions) and possibly last year's Beach Boys Smile set.

The way the box is set up is that you get to experience the band working out the LTIA material on stage before entering the studio (all the live discs are from the fall of '72, with the band in the studio around January 1973). You look at the progression of box sets over the last 25-30 years and you go from Dylan's Biograph (two third old / one third archival) through Genesis's mid 90s "Archives" (all unreleased or uncollected) to Springsteen's "The Promise" (documentary / live concert / alternate album of out-tracks) and this seems to me to be logical endpoint. I don't know what could be next except to release the actual individual tracks from each song for an entire album, allowing the listener to make his own mix. Something along the line of what I think Todd Rundgren did with his TR-1 album, but say with the Abby Road multi-tracks.

While I'm at it,I'll say my real fear is that we have in fact hit the high water mark for CD reissues. I believe it will be difficult to top last fall-winter (Achtung Baby, Smile, Aqua Lung, Quadrophrenia, the Pink Floyd Immersion boxes). My wallet still stings from that run. With the CD market supposedly shrinking I don't know if we'll ever see anything like that again. Hopefully we'll get Neil Young's Archieve set and possibly the complete Bob Dylan / Band Basement Tapes sessions out before it's all over (come on Bob & Robbie - five cds of material are already out on bootlegs...heck Greil Marcus wrote a book about it over fifteen years ago...how tough can it be).

With money tight, I'm only getting the CD/DVD set. The big box looks tempting but for another $100 + i'm over these big expenses.
Look forward to hearing Larks Tongues blasted out in 5.1

This might take a bit to absorb lol. Here's the track listing and I use that term lightly!

From superdeluxeedition.com:

Take a deep breath… below is the full track listing for the forthcoming King Crimson Larks’ Tongues In Aspic 15 disc box set. It’s a monster! All notes and comments from the record label DGM who are releasing this amazing looking set. The price has recently dropped on Amazon UK.

Astonishingly, this is the first gig this band ever played together. They’d only been rehearsing for a few weeks. To our knowledge, only this night (of three) was recorded.

series 20 (2002).

(Cross, Fripp, Wetton, Palmer-James)
3 Larks’ Tongues in Aspic (Part I)

Disc 3 mono audio from King Crimson archive tape.

Most groups chose to play a couple of songs from a recent album or a well- known hit. King Crimson played three tracks, two yet to be recorded & a 30 minute improv. All were filmed. Only Larks’ Tongues In Aspic (Part1) was broadcast on Beat Club.

Previously available via mail order as part of King Crimson Collectors’ Club
series 3 (1999).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Disc 4 (CD)

Hull Technical College

6 Exiles

This is taken from the first date of the British Tour proper, a firm 5 star fan favourite among those who have downloaded the show from DGMLive.com. Complete performance including the 30 minute Vista Training College improv, the first recorded 21st Century Schizoid Man encore by the quintet and a John Wetton interview bonus at the end.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Disc 5 (CD)

Hull Technical College

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Disc 6 (CD)

Guildford Civic Hall
November 13, 1972

1 Larks’ Tongues in Aspic (Part I)
(Cross, Fripp, Wetton, Bruford, Muir)
2 Book of Saturday (Daily Games)
(Fripp, Wetton, Palmer-James)
3 RF Announcement
4 Improv : All That Glitters Is Not Nail Polish
(Cross, Fripp, Wetton, Bruford, Muir)
5 Exiles
(Cross, Fripp, Wetton, Palmer-James)
6 Improv : A Deniable Bloodline
(Cross, Fripp, Wetton, Bruford, Muir)

Disc 6 taken from a band cassette soundboard recording. Audio restored at
DGM by David Singleton and Alex R. Mundy.

Though incomplete as a show, this has much to recommend it – a lovely Book of Saturday (still called Daily Games at this point) & a shorter but no less powerful improv than previous, with Exiles incomplete & only a taster from the second improv to leave the listener all the more eager for the missing sections.

Previously available via mail order as part of KC Collectors’ Club series 24 (2003).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Disc 7 (CD)

Oxford New Theatre
November 25, 1972

1 Larks’ Tongues in Aspic (Part I)
(Cross, Fripp, Wetton, Bruford, Muir)
2 RF Announcement
3 Book of Saturday
(Fripp, Wetton, Palmer-James)
4 Improv : A Boolean Melody Medley
(Cross, Fripp, Wetton, Bruford, Muir)
5 Exiles
(Cross, Fripp, Wetton, Palmer-James)

Disc 7 taken from cassette bootleg, audio restored June 2012 at DGM by David Singleton and Alex R. Mundy.

Also incomplete, but the material that would form the first side of the album is now solidifying, the playing has tightened as the tour has progressed and the improv’s a killer – another fan favourite download.

Previously available as a download only from http://www.dgmlive.com (2008).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Disc 8 (CD)

Glasgow Green’s Playhouse
December 1, 1972

1 Larks’ Tongues in Aspic (Part I)
(Cross, Fripp, Wetton, Bruford, Muir)
2 RF Announcement
3 Book of Saturday
(Fripp, Wetton, Palmer-James)
4 Improv : A Vinyl Hobby Job
(Cross, Fripp, Wetton, Bruford, Muir)
5 Exiles
(Cross, Fripp, Wetton, Palmer-James)
6 Easy Money
(Fripp, Wetton, Palmer-James)
7 Improv : Behold! Blond Bedlam
(Cross, Fripp, Wetton, Bruford, Muir)

Disc 8 taken from cassette bootleg, audio restored June 2012 at DGM by David Singleton and Alex R. Mundy.

The enthusiasm of the audience and the stellar playing balance the deficiencies in the sound quality with a fiery Easy Money & incomplete second improv – complete with much audience participation – giving a flavour of the evening.

Previously unreleased.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Disc 9 (CD)

Portsmouth Guildhall
December 15, 1972

1 Book Of Saturday
(Fripp, Wetton, Palmer-James)
2 Improv : An Edible Bovine Dynamo
(Cross, Fripp, Wetton, Bruford, Muir)
3 Exiles
(Cross, Fripp, Wetton, Palmer-James)
4 Easy Money
(Fripp, Wetton, Palmer-James)
5 Improv : Ahoy! Modal Mania
(Cross, Fripp, Wetton, Bruford, Muir)
6 The Talking Drum
(Cross, Fripp, Wetton, Bruford, Muir)
7 Larks’ Tongues in Aspic (Part II)
(Fripp)
8 21st Century Schizoid Man
(Fripp, McDonald, Lake, Giles, Sinfield)

Disc 9 taken from cassette bootleg, audio restored June 2012 at DGM by
David Singleton and Alex R. Mundy.

Missing LTIA Part 1 – but otherwise complete, the final night of the tour prior to a break pre-Christmas and the album recordings at the beginning of 1973. Also – although nobody suspected it at the time, Jamie Muir’s penultimate gig with the band and the final known live recording of the quintet line-up.

Previously unreleased.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Disc 10 (CD)

Larks’ Tongues in Aspic

Just looked at the top of this thread. the Amazon.UK price for the 3 disc isn't bad, but the USA price is much higher than the previous releases. I think i got mine for around $15 or so.

Rick

Can you put up the link for the 2CD/1DVD version? I only found a 1CD + 1 DVD version for £12 which I have pre-ordered.

I think Rick meant the same one that you already ordered, the CD/DVD-A set in the middle.
