Aunt Bee Taylor: Did you like the white beans you had for supper? Andy Taylor: Uh huh. Aunt Bee Taylor: Well, you didn't say anything. Andy Taylor: Well, I ate four bowls. If that ain't a tribute to white beans, I don't know what is. Aunt Bee Taylor: Well... Andy Taylor: Eating speaks louder than words. Aunt Bee Taylor: You know, your education was worth every penny of it.
Barney Fife: The last big buy was my mom's and dad's anniversary present. Andy Taylor: What'd ya get 'em? Barney Fife: A septic tank. Andy Taylor: For their anniversary? Barney Fife: They're awful hard to buy for. Besides, it was something they could use. They were really thrilled. It had two tons of concrete in it. All steel reinforced. Andy Taylor: You're a fine son, Barn. Barney Fife: I try.
I watched No Time for Sergeants last week and howled with laughter. A Face in the Crowd is another favorite.
I never could get into A Face in the Crowd, but I love No Time for Sergeants. That is one funny movie, and I believe the first teaming of Griffith with Knotts.

Griffith is almost a superhero in NTFS. A real strange and powerful visitor from another planet who trusts in man but is quick to mete out justice when the men around him fall short of that trust.
AFITC's charm for me is that it's so prophetic. It's depressing, but it's what TV eventually became. Jay Leno has his good and bad points, but I loved that he had Griffith on his show and asked him to sign his DVD copy of AFITC. I think it was right at the time of the Carson to Leno switch, so I thought it was a timely acknowledgement.

It's funny you should mention that. I was discussing such prescient movies with some friends the other day and this one never came up, but it should have.
Another is Scorsese's The King of Comedy, which was way ahead of its time, and one that we keep forgetting to consider when discussing great Scorsese movies on this board.
Both films have actors known primarily today for the comedy, showing their range as dramatic actors and doing it magnificently.
(I think it is Patricia Neal's voice that keeps me from enjoying AFITC. It's like a gorilla dying a painful death.)

If you want to see a prophetic film, rent Albert Brooks' Real Life. It's one of the first mockumentaries, but the jokes have pretty much all come to life in today's reality TV (it's still hilarious).

I will. I'm a big fan of Albert Brooks. (I might have seen it during my drinking/fucked up period, but just can't remember it.)
This one really hits me hard. My wife and I regularly watch our DVDs from all of the seasons of the "Andy Griffith Show" and a few years ago we spent some time in Mt. Airy, the inspiration for Mayberry. Andy was revered in Mt. Airy, as well as a number of other places.
Out in front of the Andy Griffith Playhouse in Mt. Airy.
RIP Andy!
