Even if you already have these albums on CD, unless you’ve bought them in the last three years they will be inferior versions. The 2009 remasters are a MASSIVE improvement in sound quality when compared to the original CD issues/reissues. Neil Young is famously fussy about sound reproduction and went to great lengths to ensure these remasters were done properly – rich and detailed with minimum compression.

The CDs all come in standard jewel cases and the ‘box’ is really no more than a thin card slipcase. Not a deal breaker, but irritatingly we had real trouble getting the four CDs in and out of this outer case. They are so tightly jammed in place that it is actually very tricky. Another indicator of cost-saving was the fact that each CD doesn’t come with the booklet you get if you buy these individually. Instead it’s replaced with a single sheet insert with the album cover on one side and track listing and credits on the other.

For the money being asked these niggles are compromises that most will be happy to accept. There is so much joy to be gained from this music, in particular After The Gold Rush and Harvest that it is likely to be the best £12 you have ever spent.

Whether you are looking to update previous issues or dipping your toe into the waters of Neil Young’s output for the first time, please do not hesitate to buy this music. The work of a true artist, undoubtedly at the height of his power.

Didn't Neil rerelease all of these albums (though not in a box) sometime after "Archives 1" came out a few years ago?

Question about the 2009 remasters. Did the booklets (that apparently don't come with this set) contain lyrics? Lyrics would be the only thing that might make me spend a little more and get the 4 individual releases.

Even less when you remove the VAT, but of course you have to add shipping then. It ended up at $19.30 when shipped to the US via their standard shipping method.

In the USA, Pop Mart is offering these on gold discs. No idea if there's any advantage. I'm having the usual problem where I successfully log in, & than every time i try to see the price it says I'm not logged in, so I have no idea of today's discounted price (I HATE their web site). Not sure if it's a Firefox issue, or....? List is $65.

It is a Firefox issue. Was able to log in with Opera. Today's price is $54.99. Again, I don't know if there is any difference on these other than the disc surface. I can say the 2009 HDCD's sounded superb. it does say "completely "remastered". That actually scares me as 44/16 doesn't get much better than the last batch of HDCD's.

That's the one I just ordered.

Just yet another chance to buy these on CD. What happened to the blurays?

I'd guess at least 75% of these 4 albums are on the Archive Blu-rays.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the gold cds were released in '09 the same time Neil released the remastered 180 gram lp box. I ordered the set from the U.K. and had a $3 Amazon credit so I got mine for a little more than $16. Popular consensus sez there is no difference in sound quality between the silver and gold discs. I'll go cheap.

I know I bought these 4 just a few years ago because they were all remastered. I assume these are the same things in new packaging. So WTF?

One thing that always strikes me about Neil is he still only has Decade as his greatest hits collection and one great song is missing from that collection.....Only Love Will Break Your Heart. What a great song.

But you can find that one on After The Goldrush.

Funny joke as told by David Crosby at the CSN show I saw Wednesday night. David remarked to his guitar roadie that he better work faster replacing the guitars between songs or he'll be back working for Neil.

And there are 2 bad things about working for Neil, you end up deaf and he pays with Canadian money.

These days Canadian $'s are worth the same or more than USA!

Neil did release the single-CD Greatest Hits comp in 2004, which includes "Only Love Can Break Your Heart." In fact, the collection could've been called Neil Young's Greatest Hits of the 70s, Plus One From the 80s and One From the 90s ("Rockin' in the Free World" and "Harvest Moon").

I forgot about that one! Not a bad little collection and it has "Comes A Time". Same pic as that 4CD box too.

But at this point Neil would need a 4CD collection to do him a little bit of justice.

Have a guess who's gonna just buy the UK set. For that little it just has to be worth it esp if they're the HDCD issues.

Gold doesn't honestly do anything for how it'll sound, it's just a marketing thing.
