Oh, I don't doubt that there are people that dislike his art, but he's also critically acclaimed, so probably wouldn't fit the "universally disliked" label.

To wit:

Awards

1981 Eagle Award for Best New Artist[12]
1981 Inkpot Award
1982 Eagle Award for Best Artist[12]
1983 Eagle Award for Best Artist[12]
1986: Yellow Kid Award, Lucca, Italy, for "bridging the gap between American and European artistic sensibilities"[12][13]
1986: The Gran Guigiri Award, Lucca, Italy[12][13]
1987 Eagle Award for Favourite Artist (penciller)
1987 Kirby Award for Best Artist (for Elektra: Assassin)
1988: March of Dimes Award, for charity work[12]
1989 Haxtur Award for Best Cover (for Question #10)
1991 Alpe de Huiz Award, Grenoble, France[12]
1992 Adamson Award, for Daredevil, and graphic experiments
2004 Eisner Award for Best Anthology (for contributions to The Sandman: Endless Nights)

Yeah. This is odd. Sinky with more votes than RL? No Greg Land as an option?

I have no idea, while he was a Neal Adams clone early on I like his unique style... :sigh:

You guys are being played. Sienkiewicz was leading 3-1 within five minutes in a poll where his very name shouldn't be included as a choice.

And you fell for it? :D

I don't dislike him, but Sienkiewicz's work doesn't lend itself as well to sequential storytelling, IMO. He's a great artist but his work can detract from the story being told -- the work ends up being more about his art style than telling a story clearly.

And Liefeld's sold millions and millions of shitty comic books. So what?

The actual "universally disliked" artist would probably be some awful artist who never managed to sell any comics and then faded out of the industry unceremoniously. For the sake of polls like this, the artist has to be well known and famous to a degree -- and if that's the case, then the artist surely has some degree of popularity, either from critics or fans.

(Incidentally, I voted Liefeld.)

His first seven or so issues of New Mutants are nothing less than genius, IMO. Some of the best comics ever. Then his New Mutant art started getting a little too out there for my taste.

His work on Batman 400 is stunning.

His Shadow series for DC are nothing less than genius. Truly original and ahead of its time.

His Elektra: Assassin is groundbreaking for an American sequential artist. His Daredevil/Kingpin story started pushing the limits of what I will accept.

Since then he has been hit an miss for me.

His Sandman was amazingly beautiful. His 30 Days of Night is a piece of shit and I want my gd money back.

Moon Knight was the height of Bill's 'superhero' career. Everything else was experiments.

At 4:20, Bill Sienkiewicz starts drawing Elektra. It is one of the coolest things I've ever watched.

That's very cool, but I don't think it's either Bill or Elektra.

Moon Knight was Sienkiewicz trying to be Neal Adams as so many of the artists then were trying to do then to a varying degree of success.

I like him when he is being original.

Again, I think the guy's art itself is absolutely gorgeous -- he's a true artist, no doubt.

I just find it distracting and confusing on a storytelling level.
