Beatles' 'Yellow Submarine' movie restored for DVD

..LONDON (AP) — The animated Beatles movie "Yellow Submarine" has been carefully restored frame-by-frame for DVD release this year.

Specialists worked for four months to individually clean each frame of the 1968 surreal tale by hand, the Beatles' holding company Apple Corps Ltd. said Tuesday.

The specialists chose not to use automated software because of the delicate nature of the hand-drawn artwork, the company added.

The colorful movie, a fantasy that features cartoon versions of the Beatles and images from some of their psychedelic songs, is currently out of print. It features some of the band's greatest hits including "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," ''Eleanor Rigby" and "When I'm Sixty-Four."

"As a fan of animation and as a film-maker, I tip my hat to the artists of 'Yellow Submarine', whose revolutionary work helped pave the way for the fantastically diverse world of animation that we all enjoy today," said Pixar studios chief John Lasseter in the sleeve notes for the re-release.

The DVD will be released on May 28, and the film's soundtrack album will be reissued on CD on the same day...

I'm guessing it's the same songtrack CD as last time.....probably won't need to rebuy it.

Why would it be remastered? It already has been.

I believe this refers to the Yellow Submarine "songtrack" CD. It would make sense that they would update that one with the 2009 remastering.

But one of the big selling points of that CD was that all the tracks were remixed as well. To plug in the remastered original mixes would defeat at least part of the purpose!

Maybe they just plan to cut out the NR?

Was the film "restored" the last time it was released - supposedly frame by frame - in 1999? I thought that releasewas pretty good. Can it be improved THAT much?

I liked the remixes on the 1999 CD - even though it was a tad loud & they used NR - and I never heard the sync issues that were mentioned. It will be interesting to see whether they change the Songtrack.

I'm hoping for a mono Songtrack.

Judging by the upward apple/Beatles logo in the upper left corner, this looks like a reissue/remaster of the Songtrack album.

I'll pass unless the sound is drastically improved.

Can the sound get any better than the last re-masters, the sound was magnificent.

So I'm sitting here with my brand new 2012 Yellow Submarine Songtrack CD as well as my thirteen year old 1999 Yellow Submarine Songtrack. Can anyone tell me definitively that there is anything different between the two other than packaging? By the way, all copyrights printed on the "new" slipcase and CD say 1999. Thanks.

Having not heard it, if all copyrights are 1999, I'm tempted to say it's the same master.

I'd have to agree with this. The tracks were all remixed for the 1999 release, but I doubt very seriously that they were remastered for this one. I could be wrong, though.
