Great interview with Susannah Hoffs here:

http://www.culturebrats.com/2011/08/fol ... -with.html

Terrific news that she mentions a solo album, as well as Volume 3 of her "Under The Covers" project with Matthew Sweet.

Quote:
Your solo album you're working on... How is that going to be different from a Bangles disc?

Wow. That's a good question. Maybe we should save that for a separate interview because it's such a long answer and I haven't thought about it. I've been working on the record in my free time this summer. Let me think about that.

OK.

It is very different from a Bangles record. The things that I grew up loving: the '60s thing, pop and folk songs, but particularly the pop songs of the '60s I grew up with as a little girl. I talk to parents and they say, "Oh, my kid loves music. My little daughter or son is always singing along to the radio." I was that kid. I was obsessed with music from... honestly, from infancy. I actually taught myself to sing by singing along to everything from Lulu's "To Sir, With Love" to "Downtown" by Petula Clark to Dusty Springfield songs to Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell. I just sang along and sang along and sang along.

I think it's really about my influences and the solo record's really all about me exploring the singing and the melodies that inspire me. It's such a longer story because a majority of the songs were written in the spring and recorded really quickly afterwards. Let's talk when that record is ready to come out and I'll give you the whole lowdown on it.

Sounds good.

It's kind of an interesting story.

Whenever I used to look at pictures of Susanna Hoffs, I would always sigh and think, "someday."

I had a huge crush on SH back in the day. Was a HUGE fan ever since All Over The Place came out. She came in to a record store I worked at (this was probably '91) and we talked for probably a half hour. I had no idea it was her until I saw Vicki Peterson pass by the store about a half hour later. Trust me, she's not nearly as attractive in person. Very, very ordinary looking.

I'm sure Susanna appreciates the last two sentences.

Simply, she didn't strike me as being this amazing beauty – she didn't stand out in any way. Like I said, I was a HUGE fan (still am) and spent probably 30 minutes talking to her yet had absolutely no idea it was her. I would have actually guessed her age to be about 10 years older than she was at the time as well. She wasn't unattractive by any means but there wasn't anything that would make her stand out in a crowd. She isn't a woman who needs a lot of makeup, but the eye makeup really makes a huge difference with her. Whenever I see pics and videos of her, I'm amazed at how really, really different she looks when she's been "made up".

Granted, this is a recent pic (and when I saw her it was 20 years ago), but this is a good indication on what she actually looks like...

Finally, between David & I we got the cover artwork, tracklisting and pre-order link in the first post!

This appears to be the official press release from Susanna Hoffs website:

Quote:
‘Someday’ to be Released July 17

Susanna Hoffs – singer/songwriter/musician and founding member of the Bangles – returns with a new solo album, Someday, on July 17. Produced and orchestrated by the revered Mitchell Froom, it’s an intensely personal song cycle that doubles as a musical love letter to the music of the 1960s, which “has always been my reference point for everything,” says Susanna. The self-released work will be distributed by Welk Music Group.

Los Angeles fans got a preview of Someday when Susanna played two solo shows at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica on April 28. The set included new songs, Bangles hits, and some of her favorite covers.

“This album was inspired by my yearning to sing songs that were as melodic and emotional as my favorite music of the 1960s,” Susanna says. “We recorded ten original songs, eight of which I wrote in a flurry over a period of a few months with Andrew Brassell. He’s a 27-year-old musician from Nashville, who’s been on the indie club scene there since he was a teenager. So the project started with me, this talented boy from Nashville, two guitars and a reverb pedal.”

Someday’s tracks include the summery groove of “This Is the Place,” the evocative “November Sun” and the lilting “Picture Me,” with its Bacharach-style sophistication, lush retro arrangements and modern state-of-the-art production enclose Hoffs’ one-of-a-kind voice in an aural tapestry of velvet and lace. SOMEDAY also features updates of two older songs. One of them is “Raining,” which Susanna wrote with Mike Campbell of the Heartbreakers back in 1989. “I rediscovered an old cassette of it in a box, and Brassell and I did a rewrite of it to bring it up to date,” she says. “And then there was ‘November Sun,’ a song I’d been carrying in my pocket since 1998. The melody was so natural to sing, and it had a baroque folk/pop style that ended up becoming the template for the rest of the album.”

Froom (known for producing such diverse artists as Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, Paul McCartney, Suzanne Vega, Crowded House, Randy Newman, Indigo Girls, Los Lobos and Bonnie Raitt) first met Hoffs when he played the signature keyboard riff on the Bangles’ “Manic Monday” in 1986. After hearing Hoffs perform the new songs on acoustic guitar at his home studio, Froom enthusiastically signed on to produce Someday.

In addition to his behind the scenes magic, Froom played keyboards throughout the recording. Additional musicians include Elvis Costello’s Imposters rhythm section–drummer Pete Thomas and bassist Davey Faragher–who played on the album’s initial sessions in June of 2011, with Val McCallum and Brassell playing guitar. A few of the songs were tracked with Michael Urbano on drums and Bob Glaub on bass.

Beyond her ongoing work with the Bangles (which Susanna formed with Vicki and Debbi Peterson more than 30 years ago), Hoffs has collaborated with a variety of musicians. They include writing and recording with Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse, blending her voice with those of Jenny Lewis and Chris Robinson on Gary Louris’ 2008 LP Vagabonds, singing on David Byrne’s “Wild Wild Life,” and covering Dylan’s “I’ll Keep It With Mine” (inspired by Nico’s recording of the song on Chelsea Girls) and the Velvets’ “I’ll Be Your Mirror” on the Rainy Day album, produced by David Roback (who went on to form Mazzy Star), and most recently an enduring collaboration with indie pop icon Matthew Sweet on their Under the Covers series.

Thanks for the tip, David. I've listened to this EP a couple of times now and it's very nice.

I like the direction Hoffs has taken her solo career. She was often the focal point of The Bangles, and when they originally broke up she could have easily sold out to whoever was that year's Producer of the Moment and started recording generic, ultra-slick pop. That never happened and I applaud her.

Updates from Susanna's email list:

"Hi everyone!

Welcome to Susanna's mailing list. We're so happy to have you and we have lots of good stuff to share.

New Album, New Website
With the release of Susanna's new solo album, Someday, coming on July 17, we've launched her new website. Hop on over and check it out. There, you'll find a Spotify playlist created by Susanna with you in mind, upcoming tour dates (both solo and the Bangles), interviews, reviews, and more. We'll be switching things up and adding more fun bits, so keep coming back.

There is also a Store where you can pre-order the Someday CD for $12 and grab some other goodies, too ... t-shirts, autographed posters, postcards, and a special edition book that includes rare archival photos and handwritten lyrics all curated (and signed!) personally by Susanna.

Record Release Event
On July 16, the eve of Someday's release, Susanna will be celebrating with an event at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. For everyone who can't attend in person, Susanna wanted you all to be able to join the fun, so we'll be streaming the event live online via Stageit. Tickets are $5 and the stream begins at 8 pm PDT ... that's 10 pm in Lima, 11 pm in New York, 12 am in São Paulo, 4 am in London, 5 am in Cape Town, 12 pm in Tokyo, and 1 pm in Sydney.

Hear Susanna speak about the creation of the new album, as well as reflect on her impressive body of work. After the interview, Susanna will take questions from both the live audience and from fans on Stageit. She'll also perform a selection of songs accompanied by a band led by Someday producer Mitchell Froom that also includes Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Pete Thomas on drums and Davey Faragher on bass, both of Elvis Costello & the Imposters.

Free Summer Sampler
To get even more new music, hit Susanna's NoiseTrade page and download the free five-song Some Summer Days sampler that includes acoustic versions of three songs from Someday and two cuts written in studio especially for the collection.

Preview Tracks
Rolling Stone has an exclusive premiere of "Raining," a tune Susanna wrote in 1989 with Mike Campbell (of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers fame). It was reworked to fit on the new record: "I rediscovered the song when I was sorting through a box of old demos and decided to update it with my writing partner, Andrew Brassell."

On July 12, AOL Spinner will have a preview of "Picture Me," as well. Susanna says of the tune, "'Picture Me' is about the burning desire to know where you stand with your significant other and, more importantly, whether the love you feel for them is truly reciprocated. The mood and emotional tide of the song shift from playful and flirtatious to anxious and insecure. Still, there is a shimmer of hopefulness throughout and, in the end, the yearning for true love is the theme that endures."

Video for "Picture Me"
Susanna spent last weekend filming a video for the song "Picture Me." Look for it coming soon to a YouTube channel near you!

Susanna on the Web
If you'd like to keep fully up-to-date with all things Susanna, join her on Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr. She posts regularly on all three.

On behalf of Susanna and her whole team, thank you so much for your support!

Someone gave me a copy of this album and I really enjoyed it. It's a solid pop album- good songwriting and vocals. Much better record than I had expected.

She's kicking off a short tour in Atlanta on Oct. 29. Hooray! That helps make up for the postponement of Emeli Sande's show here on the 13th.
