Nancy Wilson and Geoff Bywater: Married!

May 1st, 2012 11:47 AM
by Free Britney Heart singer

Nancy Wilson and Geoff Bywater got married last weekend.

The 58-year-old Wilson confirmed the news on her Twitter and Facebook.

"Love was in the air ... at the El Paseo gourmet restaurant owned by longtime friend Sammy Hagar," the couple, pictured below, wrote. "Love rules!"

The "What About Love" rocker confirmed her engagement in March via Facebook, writing: "There have been some questions about a certain ring on my left hand and yes - it's an engagement ring. There's a new love in my life!"

"My fiance Geoff Bywater is a senior exec at Fox who handles music for Glee among many other shows. We are deeply in love, the same age, and both devoted parents. There is so much happiness we share together, and our blended families too."

This was Wilson's second trip down the aisle: she was married to We Bought a Zoo director Cameron Crowe, 54, from 1986-2010. They have two sons.

She seems to get married every 25 years, so you have another shot at her when she's 83.

Good luck!

I actually did go to the same high school as the Wilson sisters (Interlake in Bellevue, Wa), but a few years apart. I never met them.

In the same part of town, I have always believed that on a vacation from college I likely jammed with a couple future members of Queensryche, but I'm not 100% certain. I was quite drunk, & they were quite young.

I also have a great revenge story from that party (that has nothing to do with any musicians), but i suspect it's more appropriate upstairs!

Heart’s ‘Little Queen’ Celebrates 35 Year Anniversary

by: Olivia Langley

Heart’s sophomore album, the mighty ‘Little Queen,’ was released 35 years ago this month.

As detailed in the band’s entry on our Top 100 Classic Rock Songs list, the record arrived in a storm of controversy — or, more specifically, passive-aggression on the part of Heart’s former label, Mushroom Records.

Unhappy that the band had defected to Portrait Records, Mushroom released the half-baked ‘Magazine,’ which featured rough studio cuts and some live tracks, right around the release of ‘Little Queen.’ The sabotage attempt backfired, however: The latter reached No. 9 on the Billboard album chart and helped Heart continue their ascent to superstardom.

Still, a legal fight with Mushroom hovered over the recording process for ‘Little Queen.’ For starters, Heart had to make the album in just three weeks, due to the looming court battles over Heart’s desire to dissolve their contract with the label.

“When we went in to record ‘Little Queen,’ the lawyer had sat us down and said, ‘There’s a hearing in three weeks, and at that hearing, we don’t know if you’re going to be stopped from completing ‘Little Queen’ until the lawsuit is settled, or not,’” recalls the album’s producer, Mike Flicker, in Jake Brown’s book ‘Heart: In The Studio.’

“Mushroom was seeing a temporary restraining order to stop Heart from doing any more recording at all till the lawsuit was settled. So the lawyer said, ‘But, if you actually get the album on the streets before then, the chances are way, way In your favor that the judge is not going to stop it.’”

Remarkably, ‘Little Queen’ reveals little about this behind-the-scenes stress. The LP underscores their dual strengths: ferocious rockers (‘Kick It Out,’ ‘Barracuda’) and delicate acoustic numbers (‘Love Alive,’ ‘Cry To Me’). ‘Dream Of The Archer,’ with its regal mandolin and harmonies, conjures the band’s idol, Led Zeppelin; the title track is a smoldering blues-rock lope; and ‘Kick It Out’ is a feisty, Rolling Stones-esque strut.

Still, the album is more consistent than Heart’s debut, 1976′s ‘Dreamboat Annie’ — and it feels rougher around the edges, albeit in subtle ways. For instance, ‘Go On Cry’ is nearly six minutes long, and it’s a somber, almost hymn-like song buoyed by gospel-style choir harmonies, nimble bass and moody guitar.

And then there’s ‘Barracuda,’ which was described in our Top 100 Classic Rock Songs list like this: “Stacked, Zeppelin-esque riffs rumble with the power of a buffalo stampede in tandem with the galloping drumming and [Ann Wilson’s] powerhouse voice — an instrument that’s simultaneously operatic, twang-touched and blues-based.”

Wilson’s rage at the misogyny she’d already experienced in the music business informed the song’s poetic lyrics. The stance Heart took in the song crystallized a galvanizing, pro-women message Ann and her sister Nancy Wilson still speak out about today.

‘Little Queen’ often gets overshadowed by ‘Magazine’ (especially since the latter was finished by the band and re-released in 1978). However, its lyrical grace and quietly rocking soul make it one of Heart’s best albums.

Don't agree with that statement at all. I'll bet LQ has outsold Magazine by a factor or 3 or 4.

Heart’s Ann Wilson On Getting Sober: ‘The Tarp has Come Off’

by: Matt Wardlaw

Yesterday

Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart cover a lot of ground in their new memoir ‘Kicking & Dreaming,’ which hits stores on Sept. 18. In the book, Nancy talks about moving past the end of her longtime marriage to film director Cameron Crowe [she has remarried since then], while Ann reveals that she’s been sober now for nearly three years.

Realizing that she had a problem with alcohol, Ann hit her own personal “rock bottom” and decided that it was time to quit in late 2009. In the book, she writes that “there was only one way this situation would turn out if I continued and that meant not being alive.”

Ann had seen plenty of warning signs all around her in prior years, but as she says, “even after witnessing Andrew Wood, Kurt Cobain and my friend Layne Staley die, I still didn’t understand the power of my own demons.”

But she would see the light eventually and as the end of 2009 was approaching, Wilson quit cold turkey. While she didn’t go the traditional route with treatment and a 12 step program, Wilson found crucial support from her friends, family and bandmates who had been through similar situations. She also went to therapy.

Revitalized as the band began working on material for what would become their new studio album ‘Fanatic,’ Ann told Ultimate Classic Rock in an interview earlier this week that she immediately noticed a very clear difference.

She says that it had “the effect of kind of lifting a tarp off of me, creatively. I was having so much trouble writing songs and just coming up with ideas when I was still drinking. Once I stopped, and have been going through this whole process of recovery and everything, it’s just as if the tarp has come off and I’m just more aware.”

“It’s all about mindfulness and being aware that the very reason why you drink is to protect yourself from all of these things that hurt and in the meantime, you protect yourself from everything good too. So it really has helped a lot. Especially with songs [from the new album] like ‘Dear Old America’ and ‘Mashallah.’”

The Wilson sisters are featured guests on the latest episode of That Metal Show, along with Lita Ford. It premiered Saturday night, but it'll be running on VH1 Classic all week.

Could the original members of Heart perform together at the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, April 18, at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles? (The broadcast will be on HBO May 18th.)

It may very well be a possibility, according to a source close to founding members of the band.

Also, Saturday evening (2/16) original guitarist, Roger Fisher, posted on his Facebook page:

"I haven't seen anyone announce it yet: THE ORIGINAL HEART LINEUP WILL PLAY AT THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY."

A performance at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction would be the first time that all of the original lineup of one of Seattle's most famous musical exports would be sharing the stage together in over thirty years.

Obviously, if the founding members do perform together, it will be very satisfying news for longtime Heart fans. Late last year, all of the original members were notified by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame of their induction as part of the class of 2013.

In May of 2010, Fisher, Fossen, Derosier and Leese reunited for the first time in over 30 years and joined vocalist Somar Macek (who currently fronts Heart by Heart with Fossen and Derosier) to perform classic Heart songs, backed by a 50 piece symphony orchestra as part of the lineup at the 1st annual Synergia Northwest Concert at the Temple Theater in Tacoma.

There has been no official word from The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Ann and Nancy Wilson, or the Heart camp regarding a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame reunion performance.

The Wilson sisters are scheduled to perform a special concert leading up to the induction ceremony at Benaroya Concert Hall on April 9th.

Soundgarden front man and fellow Seattle rocker, Chris Cornell is slated do the induction honors.

Fronted by Ann and Nancy Wilson, Heart ruled the airwaves from the mid to late 70's with four critically acclaimed albums: Dreamboat Annie, Little Queen, Magazine, and Dog and Butterfly. The group, whose work spans decades, crafted an outstanding body of material that still stands up today.

Roger Fisher, bassist Steven Fossen, and drummer Mike Derosier, along with the addition of producer / guitarist / keyboardist Howard Leese, provided the strong foundation for the Wilson sisters. Those records were produced by the brilliant Mike Flicker and engineered by Roger Fisher's brother Michael, who was also the group's manager at the time.

Heart music became the soundtrack of many a youth back in the days of Afros, feathered hair, and bell-bottoms. Some would argue that those LPs still stand as the group's strongest work ever.

Of course, questions regarding whether the band would play together surfaced. When asked if the original members would perform in April, Ann Wilson initially told Rolling Stone, "I think they'll be all be inducted, but the performing part might be different because of the whole Ann and Nancy Wilson versus the Heart band. We've been playing with our current band way, way longer than that. You know this is one of those things we'll need to dust off among ourselves. But we're both really happy if the initial lineup of guys gets acknowledged." When asked if she and Nancy would perform with the original members, she simply said,"No Nope."

However, It looks there may have been a change of Heart along the road to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. For many years, an original Heart reunion looked as if it was not in the cards, but many fans speculated that induction into Hall of Fame would be the proper vehicle for a long awaited reunion.

For those who've waited years for the full original lineup to work together again, this performance will feel like a gift. Not would it be welcome news to longtime fans, it also would provide a younger generation the opportunity to see the classic Heart lineup play together live.

We will have more information as the story develops.

Wish I would have known about this; it's the city where I live. Our local newspaper is a JOKE. Not a word was mentioned.

A live album from three songs? Lol-those things are owned by the Hall Of Shame anyway.

I also had no idea about Heart by Heart which is a wretched name!

Heart have just been added to the acts who have a tribute shown nightly on the world's largest TV screen - which runs for about 4 blocks over the Las Vegas Fremont Street Experience. There are similar tributes to the Doors, KISS and a few others. They usually run about 5 minutes, I'd guess. They show them at the top of each hour, between sets of the free bands they always have there. Anxious to see the new one this weekend!

I think I need to see this for sure!

From ultimateclassicrock.com:

Newly-selected Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Heart will join forces with Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience for a 2013 summer tour that will feature them together onstage for a 30-minute Led Zeppelin tribute to close out each show.

Heart sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson first met Bonham — the son of the late Zeppelin drummer John Bonham — when they performed the Zep classic ‘Stairway to Heaven‘ at the Kennedy Center Honors in December of 2012. More than six million fans have viewed that incendiary performance online since.

But the Wilson sisters’ ties to Zeppelin’s music go back much further than that; they performed ‘Rock and Roll‘ as their live encore for many years, and they recorded ‘The Battle of Evermore‘ in their side project, the Lovemongers, and have performed that live as well.

Bonham has helmed his own group and toured and recorded with the likes of Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers, and is also the drummer in the classic rock super group Black Country Communion. He has toured successfully with his Led Zeppelin Experience since 2010.

In a press release, Ann Wilson said the upcoming tour will feature “awesome rock ‘n’ roll music every night . . . miracles apt to happen any old time (quote via USA Today).”

The tour kicks off on June 17 in West Palm Beach, Fla.
