Is this normal? I only just realised I do it.

When trying to work out when something happened in my past, I struggle to remember the month, and often the year.

However, to specify it in my mind, I go by who I was dating at the time (if anyone), and use that as my foundation for establishing a rough date for a past occurrence.

What do you use to sort through your past?

My eidetic memory.

Alcohol.

Where I was living.

Who I was dating, where I was living, what pet I had, that sort of thing. I do it all the time. Then there's 18-25, which I have almost no memory of, no matter what.

Crystal meth will do that.

I often recall events tied in to what movie I had just gone to see.

Never. But...other things with less permanent after-effects will do it too.

Seems like a pretty permanent after-effect to me.

Where I was living. I tie it to where I was living at the time.

That's one reason it's hard for me to nail down dates over the last 12 years. I've been in the same house and the same job for 12 years. Same office, even.

Do you find yourself with a large automobile?

I changed girlfriends a lot more than I changed addresses or employment. Guess that is the most variable aspect of my life, to a certain point, at least.

where I was working is a bit tougher, since I've had over ten jobs in the past 8 years, often working two or three jobs at a time.

I guess I just remember them. I haven't had all that many different employers or cities of residence over the years.

Heh. I revisit what I was writing at the time.

Most of the time when I imagine a scene in a book I'm reading, it takes place in one of the houses I have lived (from childhood on), or outdoors near one of the houses. The mansion of my head is filled with the rooms of every place I've ever lived, and the yards surrounding them.

So often when I have a memory of something, I associate it with a room.

When I think of the movie Dumb and Dumber, I immediately think 1994, because I remember seeing the ads for it in the den of a rental house I was living in at that time. I picture myself in it seeing a Dumb and Dumber commercial. We moved out of that house in early 1995. I associate that house (the second one) with Toy Story. Because I remember Toy Story coming out while we lived there.

I usually have a keepsake put in a very private location from all the the vict...

I mean...



Nevermind.

I just pretend that the world was created yesterday, with everything (my memories, Shakespeare's writings, dinosaur bones, etc.) already in place. That way it doesn't matter.
