Despite a third Tron movie not yet being confirmed, it has been announced that studio Disney have greenlit an animated TV series based on the two existing films. Moviehole reports that the series will be named Tron: Uprising and air on Disney XD in 2012.

Bruce Boxleitner is the only actor from the movies involved in the cartoon, but other members of the cast include Mandy Moore, Lance Henriksen and Elijah Wood.

The series screenwriters Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, who also wrote the recently released Tron: Legacy, are setting the story of the new series somewhere in the thirty years that passed between the first Tron in 1982 and the new film.

Horowitz said: "Over the years of developing this movie [Tron: Legacy], we developed all these mythologies and all these back stories and all little tangential things [we want to tell in the series]. So we hope it adds to the depth of the movie."

Tron: Uprising is set between the two Disney movies and boasts an eclectic mix of notable actors for its voice cast (Elijah Wood, Mandy Moore, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Lance Henriksen, Paul Reubens and, from the films, Bruce Boxleitner is on board). The show will officially debut Thursday, June 7, on Disney XD, but you won’t have to wait that long to see an episode of the show. Disney also plans a special half-hour Tron “prelude” next month, titled Tron: Uprising, Beck’s Beginning, that will air on the flagship Disney Channel on May 18.

Here is the first trailer:

The new second trailer is at this link.

While I love Tron (flaws and all), I can't help think that this will feel like all the Clone War cartoons out there. Since we ultimately know how this will end, why should we care?

Watching that trailer I wonder if a Program would say something like "If Tron was ALIVE." Do Programs view themselves as alive? They certainly don't see themselves as dying, but rather deresoluting. But, who knows.

The animation looks great in these trailers, but the story . . . again, who cares? We know these 'rebels' won't win. And in fact, the good guys didn't really 'win' in Tron Legacy. But, whatever. Light cycles, etc. are fun.

My friend is the lead editor on this series and cut that trailer. Very excited for this.

Might as well not watch Clone Wars then because the good guys eventually lose. The fun is in the journey.

They need to use Muse's "Uprising" as their theme song.

I tried watching Clone Wars, but honestly, I lost interest. But, I think I like the look of this show more than that of Clone Wars.
