Look at the cover: if this isn't tongue-in-cheek commentary on the state of our union (and by dint of the title, musical movements of late), then Neil has in fact gone 'round the bend and taken his best backing band with him

Very cool song, sounds like a good Neil Young track. I will be ordering from his website which comes with an additional booklet with lyrics and liner notes.

Based on a few listens, I love this album. It's very Neil. Rough and fun.

In 1964, on his first big trip away from home, Neil Young played a gig with his band the Squires in Thunder Bay, Ontario. There, he was "blown away" by the folk-rock rendition of "Oh Susannah" performed by a band led by Tim Rose, whom Mr. Young now describes as "a seminal figure in music who has gone largely unnoticed." After mulling this memory, Mr. Young reassembled his rock band Crazy Horse to record this set of iconic folk songs and dusty murder ballads, including "Wayfarin' Stranger" and "Gallows Pole." Mr. Young's gravel-pit guitar adds menace to tunes like "Clementine," now known as a children's song. "We brought back the intensity of the stories," he said this week.

After reading the track list, I wasn't planning on picking this up. I just couldn't imagine needing to hear Neil and Crazy Horse plow through this tired list of old songs.

But I just read a review from a local source I mostly trust, that says this is the best Neil Young new release in a long time. I'm not sold yet, but I'm going to keep tabs.

I scanned a little bit of each track last night. 2 descriptions came to mind:

1. "Pete Seeger meets Pearl Jam"
2. "The best (& strangest) children's album ever".

While I despise most of these songs, I think I kinda liked what Neil did with them.

And it does have "High Flying Bird", which many of us know from Marty Balin & the "Early Flight" Airplane album.

i have "high flyin bird" by the au go go singers, on which stephen stills sings the lead vocal part.

Neil and Crazy Horse rule !!!

I gotta say this album took me by surprise. I sorta knew what to expect, but this turned out way better than it could have. Crazy Horse is in fine form, and the arrangements are for the most part great. I did not care for a few of the songs, but all of the rest are incredible.

Only Neil Young could pull off a concept like this, and not only get away with it, but also produce a gem of an album.

The children's choir is barely noticeable but adds nice harmony, the song selection worked really well, and the variety of styles is a plus. I don't know how this will stand up after repeated listens, but so far it is working fine. Anybody who dismissed this album without even hearing a note just doesn't get it. This is prime Neil Young, doing whatever the heck he wants, not what is expected of him. For the most part, this time he succeeded in delivering the goods.

Here's hoping his album of originals with Crazy Horse turns out sounding this great.
