So, I wanted to start a theme sketchbook and I decided on the Avengers - my first favorite super-team. It's always good when starting a sketchbook to get a really kick-ass sketch as the first sketch. That way, the artists who follow will "have to live up to" the quality of the first sketch. I got Mike to do the first one. Here it is:

Resized Image - Click For Actual Size

He also did a great "A" symbol and wrote "Avengers Assemble!" on the first page.

Uhhh... this is a sketch?!

It's pretty much print-worthy, no? Fucking amazing.

There's only one other one in the book. Doing a really good sketchbook takes a lot of time and money. I haven't really pursued any other artists because it just takes them so damn long. Most of the guys I want would have to take the book home to do a comparable sketch and that's like mailing the book to the Bermuda Triangle. They just seem to never get around to doing it. I got a sketch from Chris Sprouse in a different book that took a year, for example. The Zeck and the other sketch were pretty quick turnarounds but the next guy I'd want is Perez and I've been down that road already. I might try to get another one this summer.

My wife got Byrne to do one after Zeck's for my birthday. It's not colored. I'm thinking about getting Oliff or one of the other old school colorists to color it. It's a good sketch but I'm not too sure I want to throw it out here so the peanut gallery can go through their regular routine with Byrne art.

Zeck's sorta weird for me. Sometimes I'll see stuff that blows me away but then I'll see something uninspiring from him (like Secret Wars).

I didn't like him much back in the day (Secret Wars and Captain America). But in retrospect, I can appreciate his work.

I heard that Secret Wars was a really tough job. He had to follow Shooter's layouts, who thinks he can layout a comic with the best of 'em. Also, their were a lot of corrections making it a rush job. John Beatty, the inker, had a breakdown while inking Secret Wars.

I liked his Cap but Secret Wars wasn't as good.

Mike told me that all of Shooter's directions basically consisted of "pull the camera back". He did the best he could considering.

It did seem like everybody in Secret Wars was tiny, like little giblets.

Is Shooter's blog still active?
I can get the article but (here at work) the comments section is blocked by "Websense - TM".
