I had this problem when I couldn't get copies of ...

Awww, nevermind. I don't read DC comics, anyway.

Why exactly does Tommy walk around with scissors on his person? There is something going on in that ad that we are not privy to, I tell you.

Look at the diversity in the selection.

My favorite game! Name that artist!

No DC Comics: Infantino & Giordano?

Superman: Shaffenberger & Colletta?

Green Lantern: Giordano (pencils & inks)

I think Alex Saviuk was the penciller on the GL ad. He was the penciller on the book at that time and it has a resemblance to his style.

Maybe... the inks are just so strong. The stories that are hinted at are from the upcoming Staton run and GLs left foot does look kind of Statonish.

I was a subscription-boy when I was young. Before the widespread advent of comics shops, finding your favorites was a hunt. Subscriptions were the way to go.

Here's an example of Saviuk and Giordano. Girodano definetly over powered the pencils:

Yes but Green Lantern's hair on the Saviuk/Giordano cover and the hair in the ad are MUCH different, not to mention the facial structure.

You're dating yourself. They quit doing that -- that's what that bragging about "Shipped Flat" in the ad above means. I used to wonder what "Shipped Flat" meant (what else is there) until my Dad told me they used to fold them.

I was getting Flash via mail order in '84 (about 4 years after the GL and Superman ads above.) It had a crease in the middle and often the covers were crinkled. All it had was a brown paper wrapper, it wasn't sealed or anything.

Was it "flat" or folded? My Dad told me they used to send them in an envelope folded down the middle. In other words, they where folded down the middle and crammed in a wrapper that was one-half the size of a comic book. I got them in a brown thing (not sealed) not folded.

It seems a shame if it was mailed flat to pay a guy to put crease in them.

Now for some generally crinkled covers, I got those. And sometimes the Postal Service had allowed them to get creased a bit.

It was supposed to be flat, but between the delivery process and being stuffed into a mailbox, it was folded. A few years later, as I understand it, that they started putting them in plastic mailing bags. I think they also put a cardboard backing board in the bag to keep them from being folded so easily.

Part of me wishes I could travel back in time to my 13-year old self, bagging and caressing my comics, obsessed with their condition. I would whisper to myself -- "Relax. Most of these won't be worth diddly, and the remaining few that are just aren't worth it."
