Although I enjoy it a lot, depending on your level of Wholiginism, I wouldn't say that it's essential.

And I agree with you about the whole guest thing. I generally dislike guest singers singing lead with a band that I enjoy.

Hell NO! But, if you want to comment on them. By all means do so. This is an open forum! I have one of those from the brief US tour of 2004 from Honolulu, HI (3-8-04) and it's rather good. I think this was really the last tour where Rog sounded good, although the 2006 tour I saw wasn't terrible by any means.

I thought that the 2006-07 tour was terrific. I've listened to all of those shows and watched the DVDs. True, toward the end Roger's voice wasn't in the best shape every night, but the guy gave 120% every single time.

There's nothing really wrong with it--it has a few songs seldom (if ever) played live by earlier incarnations of the Who. The four songs on the bonus disc are apparently from what would become John Entwistle's final show.

However my copy was released on the "Steamhammer" label out of Germany, indicating a lack of major label interest in an incarnation of the Who that still included the Ox. Depressing.

This title can be found in 2-disc or 3-disc versions, but I believe that all copies contain the same 29 songs.

I agree. It's kind of the live equivalent of recording a duets album of remakes of your old hits. That's one of the reasons I never checked the AH album out.

Being the Moon fan I am, I have to mention one minor release that wasn't covered here yet... The King Biscuit compilation Best of the Best: 25 Years of Rock. This was a compilation released in 1998 that features a recording of "Won't Get Fooled Again" from their 12/6/73 Largo, MD show. Both this show and the 12/4/73 Philadelphia show were recorded by King Biscuit Flower Hour, and a portion of the Philly show was broadcast on the radio in 1973 (and released on the legendary Tales from the Who boot). As I noted before, there was talk in the late 90's of the complete Philadelphia show being released, but nothing ever came of it. This recording of WGFA and two other Largo tracks eventually turned up on View From a Backstage Pass, but that's it as far as official release of the King Biscuit material.

Another pointless comp, but...holy crap-2 new Who songs!
I was shocked when this came out to find out there were 2 new songs, and even more shocked to find I loved both of them. "Real Good Looking Boy" in particular just sounds like The Who. I think it's a damn good song and you get the added bonus of Greg Lake on bass.
"Old Red Wine", a tribute to The Ox is also a very good song. Both of these songs feature the actual Who lineup of the time (w/ Zak, Rabbit and Simon and Pino with the latter two only on one song).
I was surprised to see neither of these tracks get any airplay, but both songs have been featured live over the years.
I might be nuts, but I vaguely remember hearing an earlier version of "Real Good Looking Boy" with Entwistle on bass. If I'm right, what happened to that and has that version ever been released?

Just as I bought the other comp for the bonus tracks, I bought this one strictly for the new songs. I like them both. Roger seems to have special affection for "Real Good Looking Boy". I don't blame him.

I remember kind of semi-dreading the new songs, yet really liking both of them a lot. If "Endless Wire" was a letdown for me, it was because RGLB and ORW had really built my expectations, convincing me that the Who was still capable of making some really great music. These days, RGLB is probably my favorite post-Moon Who song.

Oh yeah. What I meant was "that's it as far as official release of 1973 King Biscuit material" but I should have specified that.

In his Who Liner Notes (http://www.thewho.net/linernotes/WhosLeftStudio.html), Brian Cady writes that "The Who with John Entwistle may have attempted a preliminary version of the song 14 June 2002." He doesn't cite his source. If they did it's unreleased, which is too bad because it would have been a nice tribute to Entwistle to have him playing on the track.

I find myself underwhelmed by these two new songs. They are okay, but not exceptional. I was disappointed that neither of them rock at all. 21st Century Who is a very mellow band, as far as new material goes anyway, and that seems pretty odd. It's really a bummer that the revitalized 1999-2002 band never recorded any new material, as Entwistle likely would have pushed them in a heavier direction. The window of opportunity wasn't open long, and they missed it I guess.

Well, those three concerts are the only three shows that King Biscuit owns--the other Who shows on Wolfgang's Vault stuff are apparently Bill Graham's.

The hardest rocking Townshend solo songs are probably "Give Blood", "Rough Boys" and "English Boy". I'm surprised that Daltrey has apparently never (according to websites that keep track of such things) sang "English Boy" live with the Who. If ever there was a solo Pete song that seemed written specifically for the Who, it would be that one.

"White City Fighting" and "Jools and Jim" are two other solo Townshend rockers I would add to your list. And yeah, you're right that "English Boy" should have been a Who song.

"Communication" is Pete's hardest rocking solo tune IMO. And from his best album.

When I saw Roger live at the Nassau Coliseum last year, he attempted to sing this song but had problems, stopped, started, stopped and then instead did "Behind Blue Eyes". The crowd was happy but I would have liked to hear him do Real Good Looking Boy. oh well.

Did they ever continue this series? I mean, this looks OK (I have no interest in owning it), but very incomplete to say the least. Anyway, this was a UK only release.

I own one, its fun and I don't believe they made any more of this series.
