Happy to see someone vote for Don McLean. That's the version that had me searching out Orbison in the first place.

I love Don's version as well, and that was my first exposure to the song. My dear mother loved Don McLean's Chained Lightning album. But Roy's is the one.

I voted for the original, but I have to give props to three other versions:

- Roy on SNL. Freaking awesome.

- kd lang at the Songwriter's Hall Of Fame after Roy died. Chill inducing.

- Roy and kd together. Beautiful.

What ever happened to KD Lang? For awhile there she looked she'd be the next really big thing (what a voice!). I love her album Ingenue but that was back in 1992!! 20 years ago!! Constant Craving turned out to be her high point. I'm still pissed her Jones Beach appearence back then.

I don't really have a favorite version, but the first one I ever heard was on one of my mom's Glen Campbell albums.

Is the Rebekah Del Rio version the one from Mulholland Drive ? If so, that's my favorite by far.
Great track, great scene, great movie.
The Orbison is not among my favorites from his catalog.

I'm the one who voted for Don McLean's version, also my first exposure to the song. Roy's is monumental, and his voice incomparable, but there's something about the simplicity and straightforwardness Don's singing and the musical arrangement that pushes his ahead for me. And amazing as Roy's falsetto was, it's always rubbed me wrong when it appears at toward the end of this song.

Not one of my faves by Roy, but he is one of the greatest vocalists ever and his singing on this track is incredible.
I also really like Pat Benatar's version. It's beautiful and showcases her extraordinary range.
